SOME CHOCOLATE TRIVIA....

  • That eating chocolate can trigger similar feelings to falling in love? Of course we know that, it's replaced boyfriends on many a Saturday night.
  • The chemica phenylethylamine, which your brain produces when you fall in love, is found in chocolate.
  • That cocoa beans were used for currency at one time?
Now we barter, we'll do anything for a great chocolate.

That cocoa is still harvested without any technical machinery?
  • But we eat it like hoovers.
  • That the idea of a sweet treat was first invented by cavemen who ate honey from bee hives.
  • And during ancient times the Egyptians, the Arabs and the Chinese prepared confections of fruit and nuts candied in honey.
  • And in Europe during the Middle Ages, the high cost of sugar made sugar candy a delicacy available only to the wealthy?
  • That boiled sugar candies were enjoyed in the seventeenth century in England and in the American colonies.
  • Also, candy is made simply by dissolving sugar in water. The different heating levels determine the types of candy: Hot temperatures make hard candy, medium heat will make soft candy and cool temperatures make chewy candy.
  • And sweet-making developed rapidly into an industry during the early nineteenth century through the discovery of sugar beet juice and the advance of mechanical appliances. Homemade hard candies, such as peppermints and lemon drops became popular in America during that time.
  • That over 380 American factories were producing candy by the mid-1800s, primarily "penny candy," which was sold loose from glass cases in general stores. In the 50's it was an extra treat to receive penny candy in clear glass (about 4") miniatures, like an airplane, teddy bear or a 1934 car. There's collecters now days for them also.
  • Today, Americans consume 11.8 pounds of sugar candy per capita each year. Experts are actively conducting research to determine other causes of cravings. Recent research has focused on chemicals in the brain, called neurotransmitters, that might affect one's mood and desire for different types of foods.

Disclaimer: A lot of graphics you might find here were collected from about 1998 and fortunately stored onto floppy disks. Unfortunately since my computer has changed several times since then, I have searched and not been able to track some of those urls down again. Those that I do know where they came from, I make sure credit is given. Apologies are extended for any inconvenience. Now, if you do know where they "originally" came from, please let me know.
