Deep Creek Lake is Garrett County Maryland’s year round centerpiece of recreation. The lake is the largest freshwater lake in Maryland, covering nearly 3,900 acres. The lake is 11.6 miles in length and has a shoreline of 65 miles. The average depth of Deep Creek Lake is 26 1/2 feet with the maximum depth being 72 feet.
In the summer, the average surface temperature is a soothing 73 degrees and in midwinter an average of 18 inches of ice covers the lake’s surface. With Deep Creek Lake being easily accessible from Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Pittsburgh, Garrett County has become a year round resort. The summer and fall months offer swimming, boating, water skiing, and white water rafting, while taking pleasure in the beautiful natural surroundings. Many events occur at this time such as The Garrett County Fair, various festivals, and the Fourth of July fireworks over Deep Creek Lake. There are also many historical sites to be visited in the area. When the cold weather sets in it is time for skiing and snow boarding at the Wisp Resort. Cross-country skiing and hiking can be done at the State Parks while enjoying the spectacular winter landscape.
