"The pandas are expensive animals. The US is paying $10 million to
Chinese conservation projects for them."
Wednesday, December 6 (Beijing):
Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are leaving for their new home in the United States today. The two baby pandas are being loaned by the Chinese government to the US national zoo for 10 years. The pandas are expensive animals. The US is paying $10 million to Chinese conservation projects for them. The US has also prepared for the arrival by renovating its panda house for $2 million. The zoo received its first pair of giant pandas 28 years ago as a goodwill gesture from China as it opened official diplomatic ties with the United States. The last of those two, Hsing-Hsing, died in November suffering from kidney disease. His female partner, Ling-Ling, died in 1992 of heart failure. Only about 1000 giant pandas survive in the wild, scattered through reserves in western and central China and the country has made strenuous efforts to preserve what have become a national emblem. However, the pandas continue to be threatened by loss of habitat, poaching and their own low reproductive rate. (Story from www.ndtv.com ) Back |
