Life isn't a drag if you grew up going to the drag boat races. I loved it and I would say, when I grow up I want to be a driver too. It didn't matter to me what I did, as long as I had a part in it. I could name just about every driver in every class and the name of their boat. It was my entire life, it was what I lived for!!
My dad started racing when he was 16 in Canada. He started out in dragsters and then went to boat racing in 1975, and raced for 10 years. He started in a Blown Alcohol Hydro and then moved up with the big boys to Top Fuel Hydro.
His first alcohol hydro was named Wild Turkey which, by the way, fit. He set a world record of 177.02 mph.....ON WATER!! Back in those days, the '70's, that was fast!
That didn't last long, he wanted to go faster. So he moved up to Top Fuel Hydro. He raced in the top fuel class until he decided to quit in 1985. There were too many people getting hurt and we had lost way too many friends to the sport. May you all rest in peace!
So he decided to go back to his roots.......dragsters. He raced Top Fuel dragsters for about 17 years. He raced in the states and also raced over seas doing match races.
Now he is racing Nostalgia dragsters and still in top fuel. It's a bunch of old time racers, and some young ones too, that come out to the track to have fun! It's a very fun and friendly atmosphere. None of the cars are newer than 1973 and their all front motor cars. |
