A small tree or shrub (up to 20 ft.) with smooth bark and small thorns, leaves are compound with rounded leaflets. Similar to Black Locust except much smaller and
the flowers are pink but not fragrant (blooms in May). In another similar species that is found only in the southern Appalachians, R. kelseyi , the leaflets are narrow and pointed.
