Eastern part of Bharuch District Consist Tribal block having rather under developed agriculture. Main crops of this area are pegeonpea, jowar, cotton, soyabean and groundnut. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) a project sponsored by ICAR News Delhi and managed by BAIF DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH FOUNDATION located at Chaswad village is perform various activities on agricultural development. KVK has observed on the basis of primary survey that farmers of this area are cultivating local variety of Jowar. Which gives very low productivity and long period for maturity. So KVK Chaswad has decided to introduce a new high yielding improved variety of Jowar. With advice of main Jowar Research Station, GAU, Surat. KVK has introduced GJ-38 variety of Jowar by conducting 12 demonstrations on 12 selected farmers in 1 acre land of feach farmer. By seeing encouraging result in terms of production (average 800 kg per acre), grain quality and mould resistance, next season during Kharif 97 area under GJ-38 variety has been increased up to double in above villages than earlier season. Area under above variety again increased up to 50 acres in five villages as compare to 0 acre initially. Now a days farmer of this area are getting on an av. 300 kg. more production as compare to local variety of Jowar.
