| Buying A New Bird: Before you go out and buy your new cockateil you should make sure that you do want a cockateil. Do you have a big enought cage for it? Are you going to be able to pay it enought attension? Make sure that you have made the right decition and that there isn't a more suitable bird for you. You don't want to have to give it away in a few months because it doesen't sute you. Home: You should get the biggest and best quality cage that you can afford and/or have a nother stand (perch) for the bird to stay on, but if you decide to do this make sure your birds ying is cliped. Feeding: Birds in the wild eat a hudge variety of seeds, fruits and vegtables, you should give your bird this variety also. Many birds die because of mal-Nutrition, as there owners just feed them seed. Food's that you should never feed your bird are Avacado, Chocolate, Salt, Caffeine, alchole and rhubarb. Sunflower and Dandilions are Cockateils favorite food along with bannanas and grapes wich shold not be fed to much. Breeding: If you are looking to breed your cockateil there are some things to think about, If your hen doesen't look after the babies are you going to be able to care for them? If your hand rared bird turns eggbound (ferral) will you be upset? If you can handle all this then here is some info that may help you out. If you are wanting to community (Random) Breeding you should use an avary, but for specific breeding use a smaller cage. Although your bird will still lay eggs you will have to get a bird box so that the eggs don't crack. Usually people shvings for the soft beading in the base of the bird box. These boxes usully coast about $10. When you intuduce your birds, you will Notice that the male will be first to come and check out the box, if he approves of it he will chew the edges of the entrance. He will then try to get the female to come see what she thinks by singing, banging his beak and spreading his wings to show off to the female. If they both agree they will mate by the male climbing ontop of the female and twisting his tail under the famale's. After this you should have eggs within 10 days. You should let the wings of a breeding pair grow out (esspecially the male) for balance while mating. Eggs usually hatch within 15-25 days.
