EXCHANGE OF LETTERS: WATSON vs WRIGHT

From Steven Watson to Adrian Gilbert:

Dear Mr. Adrian Gilbert,

Thank you very much for your E-mail. Can you inform me who is responsible for taking care of the welfare for the so called Anglo-Indians at Tiljalla from the funds generated from the many fund raising social functions held in Australia and Canada. Let me tell you that nothing is done for these unfortunate people. Therefore, where does the money go?

I also take strong objection to your words " Anglo-Indians left behind". What do you mean by this ? I am a proud Anglo-Indian, married to a proud Anglo-Indian and God has blessed us with proud Anglo-Indian children and we do not understand what you mean by "left behind". I hope you can explain this.

I would like to inform you that the actual Anglo-Indians are well off in India and are very proud to be Indians and not refugees in a foreign land where most are labourers or class 4 workers and can never be accepted in the high society of that country where the natives are the Sahibs. In India, we Anglo-Indians are still called Sahibs.

It is the mixed race of unemployed people (Binaries, South Indians and Goans) who called themselves Anglo-Indians that are lazy and uneducated that give a bad name to the Anglo-Indian community.

Please sit up and think. The average actual Anglo-Indian in India is more educated that their community members settled in overseas.

I demand an apology from you via E-mail with a copy to all the Anglo-Indians in your address book.

Best regards,
Steven.

Dear Mr. Bara Saheb Steven:

Re: Tiljallah Relief Dance

Your vitriolic outburst does little to help the unfortunates of Tiljala, who, if not "thoroughbred" Anglo Indians, are at least human beings and perhaps Christians.

I will let Blair Williams answer your hints at misdirection of funds, but I will point out that in the West, registered charities are subjected to government scrutiny; unlike in India where corruption is endemic
.
We are all very glad to hear that Kolkata A.I.'s are so well off that they are able to look after their own. Charity begins at home, so we in the West, should turn our attention to our own "class 4 refugees".

Incidentally, by British Indian Law, whether a person is 90% or 1% European on his father's side he is A.I. Think about this, the vast majority of your countrymen are Jats, who are part Aryan and part Dravidian; in other words, they are of mixed race.

Goans and Mangalorians are usually very proud of being called such. They should not be confused with Indian Christians and other "converts" who also have Portuguese surnames.

In 1947, when easily 60% of A.I.'s immigrated to "Foreign Lands", their parents were perhaps Class 4 Civil Servants, Railwaymen, Telegraphists, etc. They were wise enough to see the "writing on the wall:, and the eventual degradation of the community to the Schedule Caste by vengeful anti-British, anti-Christian Hindus.

Unlike in India, we in the West, with or without private funds, can improve our education and professional status. Most of us are Professionals, semi-Professionals, Technicians, Technologists and tradesmen. All can afford a home and provide their children with the chance of being even bigger sahibs. Why do you think millions of Indians and Asians flee from Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.

No apology needed from Blair or Adrian.

Yours sincerely,
Trevor Wright, F.I. Mar.E., P. Eng
