| Starving Kid (a Dialogue) |
| Emilys stomach growled like a furious tiger. Her feet were propped up on the coffee table in the living room of her house, and she watched tv with a blank expression on her face. A car door slammed from outside, and the front door opened. Emily jumped to her feet. Mom, Im hungry, Emily whined. She grasped her stomach with both hands, and it growled again. Oh, be quiet. I just got in from work, her mother said, with a hint of exasperation. She dropped her briefcase onto the floor. I know, I know. Emily said, and followed her mother up the stairs. Whats for dinner, though? Her mother stopped dead in her tracks and turned around suddenly. Her eyes were filled with annoyance. It has been a long, tiring day. Im drained, and not in the mood for your whining, she said, and continued up the stairs. Emily was right at her heels. Emily sighed loudly, and in a very obnoxious tone said, Ok, Mom. I wont bother you any more. Ill just sit in my room and waste away to a shadow. Send in my bread and water when its convenient for you. Emilys mother whipped around on her high heels, and her look cut deep into her daughter. What did you say? she challenged, and noticed Emily shrink back a little bit. Im hungry, thats all. What do I have to do to get food around here? Emily grumbled, her need for food taking a hold of her mind and verbal skills. Her mother continued to glare down at her. I dont have time for this, her mother shouted, and slammed her bedroom door closed. From in the hall, Emily shouted back, Fine then! Dont make me anything to eat! Ill start to look like those kids in Africa, the ones who only get one bean every three weeks or something. Ill starve to death. Youll regret not feeding me then! Emily stormed into her room, and slammed her door closed like her mother had. Good, then I wouldnt have to hear your whining! was the last thing Emily heard her mother say before she put a pillow over her head.
