Love, Alex*
On thick black marker legs
stands the smiling girl
in my brothers drawing
from 1992.
Stiff pink skirt,
purple turtleneck,
vivid, lifelike,
their colours leak
past the lines:
declarations of originality.
Her limp hair
immortalized before the use
of shampoo-conditioner
two-in-ones.
No resemblance
to her namesake,
the smiling girl remains smiling
through the years
of I hate yous and Dont hit mes.

The magic of young sibling affection
is in its transience,
but nostalgia when it has passed.
