| An Elvis Fan (a Dialogue) |
| Lord Almighty, I feel my temperature rising, Elvis voice ricochets around Bettys small room. He stands in front of her, and sings while holding her hand. She swoons, and bats her eyelashes. Oh, darling. You melt my heart, she sighs, and dances around the room with his scarf in her hand. The scarf is old, and threads dangle dangerously from all corners, but she doesnt notice. The scarf was thrown into the audience by Elvis, and on every Valentines Day, Betty takes it out of its air-tight bag to remember her love. ...It's burning through to my soul, his voice drifts around the room, causing Betty to dance faster and faster. Her knee knocks into a table, and she pauses. Oh Elvis, dearest. You must be more careful when you lead, I almost fell, she giggles, and looks at her knee. Its red, but only slightly sore. Now, divert your eyes. I dont want you to see my ravishing new dress until I tell you to turn around, Betty said, and removes her long robe. She stands in front of her full length mirror, and straightens the hem. Ok, Im ready, Betty whispers, and turns around. What do you think? Girl, girl, girl, you gonna set me on fire, is his reply, and the last melodic note evaporates into the greedy walls. Betty blushes. Oh, love. I knew youd like it, she bursts, and twirls around the room once more. We really must be getting to dinner soon. We dont want to be late for our annual Valentines Day dinner, do we? Betty opens the door, and locks it behind her. She walks slowly down the hall, her arm linked in Elvis. Your kisses lift me higher, like the sweet song of a choir. You light my morning sky, with burning love, Elvis voice rings through the empty corridor, but the perfect silence in that hall was evident to everyone except Betty. Oh, my. You make me blush, sweetie. You know how to talk to a lady, Betty says, her voice full of admiration. Now you know why I love you so. Did you receive the letter that I sent you? An old woman with a garbage bag in her hand walks past Betty with a puzzled look on her face. Havent you ever seen a woman and man in love? Betty calls after the woman, and rolls her eyes. Shes jealous, dont mind her. She doesnt appreciate the true meaning of love. You should be in a mental institution, you old nut! someone calls from an apartment, and Betty stops walking. In a mental institution? Why? Cant you accept the fact that Elvis and I are together, or can no one see our love? Betty yells back, and the person comes to their door. Betty can see that it is a teen male, with wild, angry eyes. Yeah, a mental institution, where you can talk with your dead lover. Hes been dead for over 20 years! Wake up, and realize that youre talking to thin air, he says and slams the door in her face. My, what a terribly wrathful young boy. Im glad you were never like that, Elvis, Betty says. Please won't you help me, I feel like I'm slipping away. It's hard to breath, and my chest is a-heaving, Elvis sings to Betty, and she smiles. Its ok, its only love. True love, Betty declares for everyone to hear. Come now. We must be off to dinner. Lair Homepage More stories/assignments |
