Couple in Bed (a Dialogue)
Are you awake? Katie whispered into the dark.  She could only hear the quiet tick tock of her clock that hung on the wall.  Steve, how could you sleep at a time like this, she sighed and looked in his general direction.
Im awake now, ok? Why are you still awake? Its three oclock in the morning! You need sleep, Steve rolled over to face his fiancee.
I need a hug, thats what I need, Steve heard Katie say in the dark. He smiled. He loved their late night talks, no matter how much he complained about them. He took Katie in his arms and gave her a squeeze.
Whats wrong, love? Do you want to talk? he asked, trying to sound apathetic.  He burrowed his head into her hair, in case she could sense his smile.
I do want to talk, but if you want to sleep, I guess it can wait.  Katie sulked, and Steve laughed.
Im already awake. Besides, how can I get back to sleep with your freezing cold feet on me? he propped up on his elbow and could almost make out her face on her pillow. He kissed her forehead.
Yeah, yeah, she sighed. Steve, I dont know what to do. I feel so guilty. She stared at the ceiling, the same images flashing in front of her eyes.
Why, darling? It wasnt all your fault, Steve tried to calm her down.
It was my fault. I should have listened to my conscience and not to you, Katie pushed him playfully and he fell backward onto the bed.
Steve laughed, I always told you that I was the devil on your shoulder, now you believe me.
Really, I dont think we should have done it. We didnt have the right to, Katies voice faded, and she sat upright suddenly. Did you hear that?
Steve rubbed his eyes and sat up in bed as well.
Hear what? he asked, and looked out the bedroom window. There was a street light outside of their window, but they couldnt see anything. I think youre paranoid, honey, Steve added, and glanced at his nervous fiancee.
No, I really heard something. Do you think theyve gotten a lead already? Did they trace our car back here? Katies voice started to raise until it was a shrill. Her hands flew to her face, and she started to sob.
Katie, dear. Please dont get upset. Im sure they wont catch us. Even if we did leave fingerprints, neither of us have a record, so they cant trace it back to us. Lie back down and get some sleep, Steve held onto Katies trembling hand and she allowed him to hug her.
And the money is safe here, isnt it? I mean, no one saw us haul the bags in through the back door, right? she asked, her gaze falling on the mounds of paper bills on the bedroom floor.
Steve kissed her softly, and whispered in her ear, No, honey. Its our little secret.
