The Honeymoon....
We sailed aboard the Sun Princess, leaving from Vancouver, Canada on May 23, 2005. We traveled through the inside passage, visiting various ports and glaciers. We disembarked in Whittier, Alaska on May 30, 2005.
Monday, May 23, 2005 First things first - after the long flight, we needed food! So of course we hit the Horizon Buffet! We explored the ship and took pictures. Our departure was delayed due to computer problems, but eventually we sailed north towards Alaska. We had a beautiful view of the night time Vancouver skyline. We hit the casino and grabbed some pizza before turning in.
Tuesday, May 24, 2005 Rob ended up catching a cold on the plane, but that didn't keep him down! After hitting the buffet for breakfast, we went up on deck to admire the beautiful view. Today would be spent at sea. We did some shoppig and had room service for lunch. The afternoon was spent at an art auction. Unfortunately, the painting we had our eye on, with a starting bid of $2,000, was a little more than we could afford! It was a "formal night" in the dining room, so we spent some time "cleaning up". Then we hit the casino for some black jack before dinner - which was fabulous. We had duck appetizers and Lobster Bisque. For the main course, Dee had Veal Pasta (there was a fancier name, but it escapes me) and Rob had a cornish hen! Of course we couldn't leave without dessert - so we had sundaes and a plate of pasteries! We couldn't eat all the "yummy yummy". After all that - we were so tired we called it a night!
Wednesday, May 25, 2005 Our first port of call - Ketchikan Alaska. We got off the boat and explored the city. We saw museums with huge totem poles, fish hatcheries, bald eagles and lots of beautiful scenery! After our exploring was done,w e returned to the boat for a fish fry and some late afternoon drinks. After some relaxing and napping - it was time for dinner. (As expected, you do a lot of eating on cruise ships!!!) We had another fabulous dinner. Dee had a fruit appetizer, cucumber soup, salad and Duck A'La Orange! Rob had escargo, cucumber soup and leg of lamb. We both had creme brulee' for dessert.
Thursday, May 26, 2005 Today we are in Juneau, Alaska. We took the Tramway up Mt. Roberst and hiked the rest of the way to the top. It was an exhausting journey, but breathtaking once we reached the top. We then returned to the ship for our first "excursion" - panning for gold. We got a brief tour on our way to Gold Creek. After a lesson in panning, we jumped in. Together we got a few flecks of gold, nothing substantial, but it was still fun! We went to see one of the ships shows - "Tribute". They sang and danced to songs buy the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Rat Pack and others, as well as one of their own: "Let Us Entertain You"!
Friday, May 27, 2005 The ship docked in Skagway, Alaska this morning. We had breakfast brought to the room and then went up top to take pictures of the amazing wall of graffiti that greeted us. Our second "excursion" was the Senic White Pass Railway. A train ride up in the moutnains to the Canadian border. It was beautiful - waterfalls, moutnains, bridges, tunnels, snow and lots of history! Dinner was fun, Alaskan Crab Legs -yum! What we did was get salad and then had our waiter bring on the crab legs! We split 5 dinners between the two of us! They were so good! Spent some time watching people line dance at the Wheelhouse bar and then lost more money in the casino playing black jack and craps!
Saturday, May 28, 2005 Today would be spent at sea. We got up early this morning to see Glacier Bay. Saw a whale blow her spout! The Glaciers were unbelievable - you could hear the cracking of the ice and see it fall in the water. Dee also got see a bear on shore! She was so excited that when she gave the binoculars to Rob, she forgot to pay attention to where it was and he missed it! Tonight was the second, and last formal night. After dressing up, we went down for a Lobster dinner. Henry, our waiter, kept bringing more! After we went to the Starlight Lounge to listen to other passengers attempt to sing Kareoke!
Sunday, May 29, 2005 Today we sailed up to College Fiord, where all the glaciers are named after famous colleges - Harvard, Yale, you get the idea. Saw some sea otters and birds that people on the boat said were penguins! Played the "flip it" game at the casino - all we got for our time and money was a key chain. But we were entertained. Had Alaskan Beer at lunch. It was good and a nice change of pace. The last dinner on the sip - Dee got a Turkey dinner with all the fancy trimmings and Rob got Prime Rib. We were tired and had to disembark early the next morning so we turned in.
Monday, May 30, 2005 Disembarked in Whittier, Alaska first thing in the morning. Boarded a coach for Ankorage. We had to go through a tunnel that only had traffic one way! We got to see the "bore tide" on Cook Inlet, apparently it is very rare to see! Once we got to Ankorage, we did a little shopping and since we had 12 hours until our flight left - decided to catch "Star Wars III, Revenge of the Sith". It was awesome! Then we got a hotel room to rest fro a bit until our flight left.
