SERVE THE MAN INFO
Founded in February 2002.
The band
consisted of 3 full-time members, Jeremy Howard, Cian Ronayne, Stephen
Neary and two part-time Ronan McConnell and Diarmaid McCaffrey. Fiachra Flynn
joined the group as ‘Guest Vocalist’ for ‘Hard To Explain’ by “The
Strokes” for the gig in An Grianan Theatre in March 2002. Shortly afterwards,
Diarmaid left Serve The Man, Ronan became a full-time member and Fiachra
was approached to join the band as Lead Singer.
So
we practiced every few weeks, learning songs ranging from ‘Rags To Rags’ by
“The Eels” and classics like ‘Jolene’ by the great “Dolly Parton” to
'I Wanna Be Your Dog' by "Iggy Pop and The Stooges" and‘Dead Leaves
On The Dirty Ground’ by “The White Stripes”. Towards the end of Summer
2002, we began to concentrate on writing some original material. The first song
written by Ronan was ‘Cigarette Coffee’, followed by another piece of genius
by Ronan ‘The Fallen’. This was followed on by a song, which has been called
a “meaningful piss-take” by some people; real name is ‘Why- (Jaysus
Why)’, written by Fiachra. The list of originals is growing, and the caliber
of the songs is increasing all the time, which can only be good.
Between
us, our main influences are: ‘Queen’ (Stephen); ‘U2’ (Fiachra); ‘Iggy
Pop’ (Jeremy); ‘Led Zeppelin’ (Cian); and ‘Nirvana’ (Ronan). Bit of an
interesting mix, which makes our music interesting! We all have a liking for
‘The White Stripes’ – We had a bit of a band outing on the May Bank
Holiday of 2002 when we stayed in Dublin and went to see ‘The White
Stripes’, ‘The Dirtbombs’ and ‘The Von Blondies’ all play in Dublin
Castle. Highlight was Cian taking the piss out of ‘The Dirtbombs’ drummers
when we were talking to them! And Cian walking into the sliding door!
At
the end of August 2002, we hired Mr. Enda Glacken as manager, trading under the
name of ‘Glacko Industries’. His appointment to the band was made along side
the appointment of Eric Bonner, Peter Lee, Damien Mc Clafferty and Simon Houston
as crew. Also, in October 2002, Mrs. Aoife O' Donnell of 'Pony PR' was appointed
PR Manager. We would like to thank everyone mentioned for their
help.
In November 2002, we played at a band competition in Sligo, and judges from the music industry and 2fm gave us this review:
“Great energy and good dynamics in the set, got the crowd rockin’, great bass playing and lead guitar work, a band with a bright future once they stick at it, please don’t waste it guys!!!”
