One person died Tuesday in a house fire in north DeKalb County, authorities said.

The fire broke out about 9:45 a.m. in a home in the 4200 block of Tucker North Court, in a neighborhood off Chamblee Tucker Road, DeKalb Fire Capt. Eric Jackson said.

Jackson said arriving firefighters found heavy smoke and flames, and three people who had escaped the fire. Told that there was a man possibly trapped inside, fire crews tried to search the home, but had to retreat due to the flames, Jackson said.

Firefighters were also hampered by “pack rat” conditions inside the house, Jackson said, explaining that there was a lot of clutter.

He said it took crews about 15 to 20 minutes to douse the flames enough to make a more thorough search, at which time the body was found in the basement of the brick house.

The identity of the person killed, and the cause of death, has not been determined, Jackson said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, he said.
