As suspected, Amazon's S3 cloud-based storage service failed because of failures in Amazon's inability to balance windows web server its server load. But the real reason was far smaller: just one corrupted bit in status messages passed among the Amazon servers caused the cloud to act less like a unified anynomos server whole and more like disparate, ibm voice server rhel independent units. Amazon thought their checksum safety net would detect the bits; the problem is that it was set up to prevent errors in customer data, and not its own internal communications.
