"Too Hot To Handle"

Firefighters from Vauxhall, Alberta watch helpless as a stack of hay bales burns to the ground in the middle of a Hutterrite colony.

"The glow of the fire could be seen miles away which helped me find the fire on back roads and dirt tracks. The intense heat and lack of water prevented the firefighters from doing anything more than preventing the fire from spreading. Once again, I had to rely on available light which was readily available from the burning bales. I think the way the stream of water caught the reflection of the fire makes this photo. So did the judges who awarded this photo third place in the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association Photo Awards in 2003."
