If you have never seen Visons of Escaflowne, you are possibly missing the greatest underground anime today.  Although not nearly as popular as the Gundam series, its use of guymelifs (its robotic counterparts) reminds you very much of it.  With no annoying tag lines and plenty of angsty romanaces, it keeps me always coming back.
Background-  In the series and movie, Hitomi gets transported to Gaea, another planet, where she can see the Earth and the Moon in the sky.  She meets and falls in love with Van De Fanel, King of Fanelia.  Not bad, for a gal not even out of high school yet!  She and Van save each others lives throughout, and interestingly, Hitomi is the only person on Gaea who thinks his wings are beautiful!  On Gaea, he is the last descendant of a race of people known as the Draconians, who are thought to bring bad luck to everyone.  Called the accused people, Van constantly hides his heritage. In the movie his bother, Folken, becomes the villian, and it is he who brings Hitomi to Gaea.  Hitomi is known as the "Wing Goddess" in the movie, and it is she who can control the Escaflowne to some extent.  Van is always the pilot of Escaflowne, and it is the heritage of his family line.   Buying the series can be VERY expensive, so get it from my favorite site-www.DiscountAnimeDVD.com you can also buy the music.  Highly recommended

The music for Escaflowne is amazing, as most is performed by Maaya Sakamoto, who plays the vocals for Hitomi, and the end title by the voice for Van.
Opener-No Need to Promise
End song-Mysic Eyes

Best song-Sora's Folktale-movie
This cover for the single "Yubiwa" for the movie was from Japan. The art for the movie was just as amazing as the series, with the same voices for both.  "Hitomi" again does many vocals and the below shot is from the movie's other music lead, the seer for Folken-Sora

Yubiwa-movie end title version lyrics
My tears come forth after all, I cannot see your last smile.  Don't go, don't go, stay here.
Running up towards the sky.  Even if it was that little me, I loved you more than anyone.  Thank you for those countless important feelings, you gave them to me.
Don't forget you're not alone.  Far away, yet holding hands.  My first love, the first time I got to know, that there is such sadness. If something goes away, another will come again.
This farewell smile you gave to me, to live on with strength.  That message from you.
When you come back, we are two. Even far away, the eyes of each other. Staking it all on hope.  Let's make a promise, today's vehemence, embrace it, to live tomorrows future.
