| On the morning of Thursday, October 19, 2000, I woke up about 4 in the morning with some pretty strong contractions. Because I had already spent much the previous early morning in the L & D of the hospital I planned to deliver at, I wasnt in a rush to go back. Plus, I wasnt due until the 23rd of October and the baby hadnt even dropped yet. However, by 4:30am, the contractions were about 3 minutes apart and lasted 2-to 2- min apiece. It felt like a malicious donkey was kicking me. I called my mother and said, I dont mean to bother you, Mommy, but it huuuuurttttsss! By now I was lying on the couch in tears. My mom came over and told me to get dressed. I could barely move. I spent the 30 seconds I had between the end of one contraction and the beginning of the next trying to breath! She went and found an enormous brown and white checked dress and a pair of jeans and dressed me. Then, after the next contraction ended, she dragged me out to the truck. When we got to the hospital, a security guard saw us and she ran in and got a nurse, who brought me a wheelchair. I was wheeled up to L & D and they took me to a room. I immediately began to throw up. I was given Nubane (Nubaine?) to take the edge off the contractions and the nurses helped me change into a hospital gown. I was checked and the doctor said I was about 4 or 5 cm. Youll have this baby by lunch time, they said and sent for the anesthesiologist. I got my epidural and relaxed. We called my friend Veronica and left a message for my boyfriend at the time, who was in school. When I got to about 6 or 7 cm, my boyfriend showed up. He actually walked to the hospital. My friend Veronica had arrived already. A steady supply of epidural kept me jolly and we all watched TV and joked around. The nurses checked me every few minutes but my dilation had slowed down. You see, my epidural had a little button I could push for an extra jolt of medication and I had been wearing that little button out! The nurse (what an angel!) told me if I kept pushing that little button, my labor would stop and Id need a c-section. Needless to say, I stopped pushing the button. I eventually made it to 10 cm, but had an anterior lip that would not go away. The nurse felt like I could push past it but the doctor disagreed. Finally, the nurse threatened to go over the doctors head so the doctor conceded. It was time to push. I asked if I could take a nap first. When we (my mother, Veronica, and I) awoke, it was around 2 pm. I felt refreshed and ready to push. Of course, this being my first time, I pushed wrong for a while before I figured out how to do it. As Aaron crowned, the nurse asked if Id like to see. I said yes and she produced a full length, wood framed mirror from God knows where. My bottom parts looked so distorted and I was pooping-not a nice sight! I kept pushing. I felt a burning sensation as I brought my son into the world. After his head came out, I stopped pushing. The nurse said, What are you doing? Hes not out yet! Id thought all you had to do was push the head out and the rest kinda followed. Not this chap. I had to push his shoulders out, too. They put him on the little scale thingy. Nobody was really saying anything. Finally, my mother said, Regina, thats a big baby. Aaron Jarred came into the world on October 19, 2000, at 4:11pm. He was 8 lbs 2 oz, and 19 in long. His head was 13 in, and his chest was 13 in. |
