Many people are surprised that Plus One is actually a Christian act.
Nathan: Yeah, we all grew up listening to Christian music as well as mainstream music. It's part of our life. (Looking over to Jason) It's our faith isn't it? We have songs about relationships and girls like "Last Flight Out." Those are the things we experienced. At the same time, just as much as we experienced love, we've experienced God's love in our lives. That's where our faith comes from and we want to sing about that too. We definitely want to keep our Christian lyrics and music.
What do you guys hope to achieve in the secular music industry?
Jason: I think one thing that makes us influential is definitely our message -- the message of hope, a positive message to the society with something wholesome, something they can lean on and find security. Music today has so much negativity and I think it's refreshing for a group like us not only for the consumers to listen to the music, but also for the people we work with on a daily basis, from our management, to the record people, hair/makeup people. Whoever we come to contact with, we want to have a positive impact on them, and somehow show them that this is real. This isn't just a gimmick or another marketing scheme like we are a Christian pop group, we are going to sell tons of records, make lots of money and have tons of girls as fans. The thing is, we really believe in something, and we have a message to talk about. This is the way we hope to influence society and will always hope to do so.
You reckon there will be more Christian converts now?
Jason: Because of us?
Nathan: That will be cool!
Jason: That's our prayer, definitely as a Christian and as an ambassador for Christ, so to speak. The whole reason we feel like to be in this group is to relay a message that we feel in our hearts. We have seen the power of Christ in our lives and we want to convey that, hoping that lives will be changed.
Nathan: But I don't want people to look at us and think that we are here trying to convert people to our religion. I don't like looking it that way. I want people to end up having a relationship with God. It's not like, "Oh! I believe in Christianity. That's something I'm going to do." It's not about what you are going to do; it's more about the condition of your heart. Through our music, I would like to help our audience to know that God's a friend. It's like I'm talking to you now, I want people to know that they can talk to him that way. You know what I mean?
It's always amazing that acts like DC Talk, Jars of Clay and Plus One are able to express their faith through their music. Why does God inspire you so much?
Jason: He inspires me so much because I have seen his power. He has changed my life with his power in a radical way. I used to be a different person than I am now. I am what I am today because of Jesus Christ. I have seen what he has done in my life and to my family and so that's why I sing about him. I feel a call to do so. But that doesn't mean I won't sing love songs about the normal emotions in life as well. I think he has given me a gift and I want to use it for him.
Are there times when you ever question your faith?
Nathan: That was before. You know, I grew up in a Christian family. And so I was like "Yeah, I'm a Christian, I'm a Christian." Then I was asked myself why am I saying this? It is because my parents are Christians? So that was the time I questioned my faith, which I think everyone should find out what they really believe, not just because their families or friends believe in it.
You guys are reaching out to a pop audience. How different are they to a Christian audience?
Nathan: You know the interesting thing is, in the beginning, a majority were Christians. But as the same time, we do a lot of mainstream events too. Sometimes there's a difference, sometimes it doesn't seem like there's a difference at all as far as like how the crowd reacts -- they still scream and have fun. We draw a lot of younger audience, so we don't get a lot crazy fans like at a rock concert where there're doing crazy stuff like drinking beer, moshing... We normally don't have those kinds of crowd. (Both Christian and pop) crowds are pretty much wholesome. We are all having fun so I think they are both the same.
Being in a Christian band, do you have to watch what you say?
Nathan: I guess it's kind of weird. Even though we aren't in the public eye, we try to watch what we say 'cos we are Christians. Certain things we definitely don't want to say 'cos this is what we believe in. There are things that are controversial and taken the wrong way easily so we do take extra caution even more to make sure nothing is misunderstood. That's the main thing.
A good example would be saying certain slang words like "Gosh." Some people would think it would be a wrong thing to say so we try not to say even little words like that. To you it isn't a big deal right? See, when I was growing up, I don't think it is a big deal either. But some people do take it the wrong way. I know it sounds kinda stupid but...
Jason: Maybe not something like "Gosh" but more of words like "Sucks."
But isn't that part of your American lingo,?
Nathan: It is! But for our Christian audience, it's kinda weird 'cos sometimes, some people take offence to that. So not to offend them, we just avoid the whole thing.
What if you accidentally say it?
Nathan: If it happens, well, that's us. But we try to make sure we don't do it a lot.
Most critics don't give boy bands a second chance these days. How resilient are you guys?
Jason: I think Plus One has a great shot of being very successful. We've already been successful in the U.S. and we have gone Gold since May. And our music is spreading over the world that's why we are now in South East Asia touring. I definitely think that there's a big market for us out there. The same people who like *NYSNC, Backstreet Boys are going to like Plus One as well. A person doesn't just go out and just buy one record; they buy all kinds of records. We hope we can get more fans, this thing will continue to blow up and we will continue to give God all the glory for what we do. We are staying focus on why we are here and what we are doing.
Nathan: I think it also helps that we do play a few instruments. When we go back in U.S. for our own headlining tour in spring, we are going to do one or four acoustic songs probably, playing our own instruments. I think it's something that would definitely give us longevity 'cos it's something real.
We heard about what happened in Manila. What were you guys thinking when the crowd started to go wild?
Nathan: I didn't notice until the third song! We did three songs and I didn't notice until a lighter went by my face. I was like "Okay, what's going on?"
Jason: It was pretty crazy! Like there was this big group of rockers...
Nathan: I think it was just in the front. The whole audience was like "Yay! Plus One!" and cheering for us. There was this 200 - 300 of...
Jason: Rockers with no shirts on, long hairs and here you bring out five pretty boys with nice clothes. It's like "Clean cut guys, we hate you!" (Laughing)There isn't much chance of us surviving out there!
But you showed your professionalism performing right to the end of your set.
Jason: Yeah, we have to finish!
Nathan: I was like "God, please don't let me be hit!"
Jason: I was praying but I got hit by something too!
What was it?
Nathan: I think things like beer cans, lighters. But no one really got hurt.
Jason: I think I got hit by a shoe!
Nathan: Really?!
I read that you guys are shooting your video "Here In My Heart" in Singapore. Why Singapore?
Nathan: 'Cos it's the best country in the world!
Jason: Best country in the world!
Dodgy! Have you been here before?
Nathan: No! To be honest, it's a timing thing. We are going back to America and at the last minute; they found some beautiful locations here. That's why they decided to do it here.
You guys wrote one song for the album. Will there be more for the next?
Jason: Definitely. We are all writing. Hopefully, that will be something to look forward to for the next record, more from Plus One from the writing side. Nathan and Gabe are actually working on their producing skills.
Does that mean you guys have full artistic control?
Nathan: We'll see. Actually we have a meeting in L.A. in about a week to talk our A&R director on what we want. Definitely it's a team of people and not just like one person. We've to get everyone to agree. The label people do listen to your opinions.
