Some imaging techniques I have found very helpful are simple basic procedures we often overlook. Posture is extremely important in learning to get a feel for your own body. To straighten your posture, stand with your back against a wall. Your heels, calves, buttocks, shoulders (not just shoulder blades) and the back of your head should all be touching the wall. Feel your spine being elongated as though a string were attached to the top of your head pulling you up. Now take one step forward from the wall holding this straightened position. How does your body feel? How is it different than the way you normally step? Take notice of where your center of gravity is.
Our center
of gravity is in the region of the solar plexus, which is located slightly
above the bellybutton. Too often as we go about the routine of daily
living we have a tendency to assume a stooped position, allowing our head
and shoulders to lead the rest of the body. Prime examples of this
tendency are walking up a flight of stairs and vacuuming. Try walking
in a straightened position with the solar plexus leading the way.
Look at your body position in a full-length mirror. Notice the difference
in how your body looks depending on how you choose to stand.
Learning
to maintain good posture has not only the immediate benefit of uplifting
the entire body, but helps prevent injuries during fitness routines.
Which brings me to the next point, which is learning to exercise with correct
form. It was many years and many a pulled muscle before I found out,
all the leg lifts in the world weren't going to do my lower abs any good
if the small of my back was not flat against the ground.
Above
all, whatever you choose to pursue should enhance the joy that comes from
within you naturally. It does not promote a healthy, positive attitude
to undertake fitness routines we dread participating in. If you choose
to join a group or take a workout class, make sure your spirit is comfortable
being there. You should always feel as though you belong and not
as though you are an outsider trying to fit in.
Most
importantly learn to flex the muscles of your imagination. The word
image is a form of the word imagination and in the world of creative genius,
the imagination always precedes the image. Learning to train your
mind to see yourself as the person you want to be, is by far the best exercise
anyone can perform. Learn to sense yourself as already being the
way you would like to be. When you exercise feel your muscles strengthen
and tighten, imagine and sense yourself being the way you want to be.
When
you look at your body in the mirror, pull up that area of flabby skin as
though it were already toned. Look at yourself in this manner for
a few moments. Let the image of this toned looking area ingrain itself
within your mind. The more you train your mind to see what you want
to see, the more receptive you will find it in creating what you want to
create.
In the
end, I achieved the results I wanted not because I bought expensive equipment
or followed the latest fad, but because I chose to see the impossible as
being possible.
Remember
in all you do, you alone hold the key to achieving your heart's desire
and all you have to do is believe you can.
