Event log: Today we started before 0700. We went to Denny's to fuel up before setting out for Datil at 0800. The first 25 miles were uphill to Magdalena. I had a good time climbing because it was cool. About 5 miles from Magdalena, we started to ride into a strong head wind. It was between 20 and 25 mph. I thought it is not too bad. I stopped at a convienence store to wait for Doug and Dave to catch up. I talked to a lady in the store and commented about the wind. She told me that the wind was light today. She said normally her SUV is normally blown all over the road. After the other two caught up and had lunch, we started again at 1230. We climbed a few more hills before we decended into the VLA valley. The VLA is the Very Large Array antennas (see below). I was able to see the other side of the valley, 20 miles across, and thought it would not take to long. It took 1 1/2 hours to reach the antennas. Remember the head wind I mentioned earlier? Half way across the valley it started to rain along with the wind. I finally reach Datil at about 1600. I was on the bike for about 8 hours and the other two were on the bike much longer. THIS WAS THE HARDEST 65 MILES OF MY LIFE!! and I have been riding 20 years this month. Mark |
