Event log: Today I started at 0500. I wanted to get an early start because my plan was to ride all the way to Alamogordo. I started down highway 1 from Socorro to San Antonio. I was riding in the dark with only my helmet light to guide the way. I was half way to San Antonio and I heard some dogs barking, so I turned the light in the direction of the barking. I saw two sets of green eyes staring at me. The eyes were two feet off the ground, so I knew they were attached to large dogs. The eyes were still for about 10 seconds and then my fears were realized. The green eyes started towards me. Normally this would not have been a problem, but with the 75+ trailer attached, it is hard the sprint. I managed to escape at 27 MPH hauling the trailer. The dogs must have stopped at their imaginary line at the end of the property. Needless to say, I rode rather fast past the rest of the farm houses until I reached San Antonio. I started to get light 10 miles outside of San Antonio. The rest of the trip to Carrizozo was uneventful. I ate lunch at the Four Winds restaurant. My plans were to meet my family at the restaurant so they could pick up the trailer. That way I could ride the last 60 mile of 130 without the boat anchor. They were running late because my wife had a Saturday bike ride scheduled. I met up with them 11 miles outside of Carrizozo. Did I mention the 25 MPH headwind? I was at mile 88 for the day and decided I had had enough riding by myself a jumped into the truck. I was tired and not having as much fun anymore. I still got my 1000 mile in though. We had extra miles the first and second week so I was able to get the 1000. Mark |
