SAM (Mole) is a four year-old, sandy blonde mutt (terrier mix) who was rescued from a Los Angeles pound by animal trainer Dana Dube, who worked with the original Buddy from "Air Bud." Already a native of Hollywood, Sam landed the role of Mole, Anthropology Professor Declan Dunn's stray pup, in, "Mysterious Ways."
Mole, named after a large misshapen mole on his belly, is the canine that Declan inherits after revealing to the town folk of Buckshot, New Mexico that the mole was not in the shape of the Virgin Mary. "Sam has distemper teeth and appears to have been badly mistreated, but since we have been working with him, we've seen so much progress. He still has a long way to go, but the trust is building," says Dube. The producers of "Mysterious Ways" were searching for a dog with a certain look, but one that could be trained. They auditioned a lot of animals, but they fell in love with Sam. "The executive producers were patient with Sam while we were training him," Dube confesses. "In the show, Declan is always trying to train Mole, but to no avail...Mole is not interested and just has this adorable blank look on his face. Sometimes it gets frustrating," she adds, "but dogs have such a willingness to please. You just need to communicate with them on their level." Dube says Mole has learned to start trusting humans again, particularly his new best friend, Rae Dawn Chong, who adores him. Executive Producer of the series, Carl Binder, chimes in, "I love Sam. He's fairly new to the business but he's going to be a star!"
