PLACE VALUE CHA-CHA-CHA
Materials needed: sentence strips, or posterboard cut into strips, rulers, tape and Markers
If teaching to the Millions place - have students make 7 lines side by side about 4-6 inches in length. (They will be placing their feet on these lines so they need to be long enough not to overlap another place.)
Students may label these lines - starting with Millions, then Hundred Thousand, and etc. until they get to the Ones place.
Next, the students secure the strips to the floor with tape and they are ready to do the "Place Value Cha-Cha-Cha".
Students may work in teams, with students that know place value helping students who are struggling with place value.
At first, the Teacher calls out the place value, alternating frequently and saying "cha-cha-cha" after the value is called out.
Left foot can touch the Millions place, and the Thousands period and the Right foot can touch the Thousands Period and the Ones Period. In this way - both feet are being used. Students love to be the caller, too.
And later, when the children learn about decimals, the decimal can be the center point, and another strip can be made with the Left foot touching the whole numbers and the Right foot touching the decimal values.
