Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 28 Mar 1919. Report the death of Mrs. Soren SVENDGAARD, which occurred at the farm home four miles southeast of Arlington on last Tuesday morning, from a brief illness with influenza, was sorrowfully received by hosts of friends of that estimable woman and her interesting family in the community where she was known and loved for her many womanly virtues. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas MADSEN, highly esteemed residents of the Orum and Kennard neighborhood for many years. The husband, who is reported critically ill with the influenza plague, four young children, two sons and two daughters, aged respectively eight, six, four and two years, are bereft of her love, affection and mother's care. Three brothers, Andrew MADSEN of Lyons, Burt County, Harold MADSEN, the merchant at Dale Siding and Lawrence, living with his parents, are surviving near relatives. The hand of fate has dealt harshly with this estimable family. After a life of wedded bliss, covering a period of eight or nine years by intelligent effort and painstaking industry, they purchased a 160 acre farm, one of the most valuable in the county, with a fine, large, modern residence and splendid improvements throughout and were enjoying life, prospering contented and happy. They drove to Arlington to do some shopping one day last spring leaving the children and a young girl at home. When they returned they found their home and all its contents a smoking heap of ruins, nothing saved, not even a change of clothing, nothing but what they were wearing. But they didn't despair; they immediately set to work and erected a new home, better and more costly than the one destroyed. And they were so happy in the occupancy of it and hopeful for the future. It's hard to reconcile oneself to the belief that His way [sic] are always merciful and just.
Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 5 Dec 1968. Blair Native Is Killed In Alaskan Crash. Brother of L.W. SVENDGAARD Was Plane's Co-Pilot. Mr. Gerald SVENDGAARD, formerly of Blair, was among 39 persons to lose their lives when a Wien Consolidated Airline F-27 twin engine prop-jet crashed 150 miles southeast of Anchorage, Alaska on December 2nd. He was co-pilot of the plane. The plane went down about 30 miles from their first scheduled stop at the Village of Illiamna and was found half submerged in a lake in a marshland area surrounded by small mountains. It was 11 below zero and there was a ground fog. Relatives in Blair have not yet received word as to the recovery of his body. Woodrow SVENDGAARD of Blair is his brother, and Mrs. Peter A. SORENSEN (Helen) of Omaha is his sister. Other survivors are his wife and three daughters at Anchorage; his mother, Mrs. Goldie SVENDGAARD of Seattle; sisters, Mrs. L.D. ANDERSEN (Emma) of Ottertail, Minnesota, Mrs. Kermit FATTIG (Norma) of St. Joseph, Missouri; Mrs. Charles ANDERSON (Louise) of Kent, Washington; Mrs. Clair ANDERSON, Seattle; and brothers, Maynard and Bill, both of Seattle. His father, Soren A. SVENDGAARD preceded him in death. Gerald was born February 22nd, 1925 in Blair and attended grade school here before graduating from a St. Joseph High School. He was a pilot for tourists on bush trips in Alaska before serving as a pilot of his own plane on a mail route for the Federal Government in Alaska. For the past 5 years he has been with the Wien Consolidated Airline.

Obituary. Blair Pilot-Tribune, 20 Aug 1936. Poisoned Field Corn is Fatal to 11-Year-Old Girl. Doris Jean SVENDGAARD Dies of Poison After Minor Operation. Funeral Rites to be Held Tomorrow. Blair Farm Girl Undergoes Tonsillectomy While Suffering, Unknown to Her Parents and Physicians from Toxic Poisoning. Effects of eating drouth-poisoned toasting ears Monday proved fatal Tuesday evening to Doris Jean SVENDGAARD, aged 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew SVENDGAARD of west of Blair, after she had submitted to a minor operation that morning for removal of her tonsils. Unknown either to her parents or to attending physicians, toxic poisoning had set in. Neither the poisoning resulting from eating the corn nor the tonsillectomy would have proved fatal separately, physicians stated. While Doris Jean was on the operating table at a Fremont Hospital Tuesday, both Mr. and Mrs. SVENDGAARD became ill from the effects of eating the homegrown field corn. At home, meanwhile, two of their youngest children, Betty and Richard, were ill from the same cause. All recovered later in the day. Home Before Death. Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 16 Nov 1972. Stanley SVENDGARD Is Victim of Plan Crash In Platte River. Accident Took Place Some Time Sunday Before Daybreak. Stanley SVENDGARD, son of Andrew SVENDGARD of Blair and a life-long resident of Washington County, Was killed early Sunday when an airplane he was piloting crashed into the Platte River just south of Fremont. The plane struck the water a short distance upstream from the Highway 77 bridge and was easily visible from the highway. Mr. SVENDGARD was a truck driver who did custome hauling in several states. He had been living with his brother, Andy SVENDGARD Jr. in Arlington. Because of Stan SVENDGARD's type of work, he was often gone for severals [sic] days at a time on long runs. Mr. SVENDGARD's airplane was discovered in the Platte River some 350 feet west of the highway bridge south of Fremont. The airplane was noticed at about 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning by a motorist driving across the Platte River bridge. The tail of the airplane was sticking out of the water. Fremont Fire and Rescue squadsmen were called to the scene and had to take a boat out to the wreckage. Mr. SVENDGARD's body was found just a few feet away from the fuselage trapped underwater. The plane was near a sand bar in the river and was in only a few inches of water. The Federal Aviation Authority sealed off the area and the body was taken to Omaha for an autopsy. Monday the body was taken to the Campbell Mortuary in Blair. Results of the autopsy were not available as this paper went to press. Officials are not speculating that there may have been another person with SVENDGARD when the plane crashed into the Platte River. Paul CHUDOMELKA, in his late 30's was reported to have been with SVENDGARD in two different Fremont night spots Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The two men had been seen together at the El Coco Restaurant and Marion's Villa. The last time the two were seen was about 1:15 a.m. CHUDOMELKA's car was found in the lot of Marion's Villa after he had ridden to El Coco's with SVENDGARD. It is theorized that the two may have taken an airplane ride from the Fremont Airport some time after 1:15 a.m. on Sunday. The Fremont airport does not have a control tower and no record is kept of aircraft departing or arriving at that time of the morning in Fremont. There were no flight plans filed with the nearest Flight Service office, which is located in Omaha. Andrew SVENDGARD, in Arlington, said that his brother had been on a trucking job for the preceding four days and he was not even aware that his brother was back in the area with his truck. Both Stan and Andrew SVENDGARD were pilots and kept their Piper Commanche at the Fremont airport. Stan was the son of Andrew SVENDGARD Sr. of 2348 Fontanelle Blvd. of Blair. Stan attended Blair High School. Other survivors include his brother Andrew Jr. of Arlington; Richard of Blair; and James of Worchester, Miss. Surviving sisters are: Mrs. Betty STOETZEL of Hastings and Judith SVENDGARD of Pomona, California. Funeral services are being held at the United Methodist Church in Blair, today, Thursday, and burial will be made in the Blair cemetery. The Rev. Charles GATES is conducting the service and burial is under the direction of the Campbell Mortuary. Pallbearers are William LIPPINCOTT, Charles DORNACKER, Willard VanBUREN, Milo WORMSTEAD, Martin CHAPMAN and Burt MERRIWEATHER.

Obituary, Blair Pilot-Tribune & Enterprise, 11 Nov 2004. Pearl E. STRICKLETT, 95. Pearl E. STRICKLETT, 95, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at the Carter House in Blair. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Blair. Pearl Eulala (SVENDGAARD) STRICKLETT was born Sept. 8, 1909, on a farm near Orum. She was the youngest of nine children born to Peter and Emma (JENSEN) SVENDGAARD. As a youngster, she rode a horse to March School, and later by horse and buggy, which she drove herself, picking up friends and relatives along the way - an early version of the school bus. She graduated from Blair High School in 1927. On July 31, 1929, she married Peter STRICKLETT Jr. They made their home in Blair with their four children. Mrs. STRICKLETT lived her entire life in Washington County. She was a granddaughter of Soren JENSEN, one of Washington County's original settlers. She was very proud of her family heritage and the large JENSEN picnics each summer kept her "in the loop" as to the whereabouts of her many aunts, uncles and cousins. The SVENDGAARD family picnic provided the same opportunity. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her children and their families. If she could have had her way, they would have all lived in Blair. She enjoyed entertaining in her home, her daily crossword puzzle, playing bridge with her friends, and various card games with her family - she never turned down a good card game. She was a 75-year member of the First United Methodist Church and a long-time member of Eastern Star. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Deane and Virgene STRICKLETT of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughters and sons-in law, Mary Elizabeth and Gary JOHNSON of Surprise, Ariz., Susan Kaye and Bruce DeBOER of Castle Rock, Colo., and Patricia Joy and Wayne STORK of Omaha; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Helen SKOV, Phyllis STRICKLETT and Carol Jean "Sally" McVICKER; a brother-in-law, Tom POWELL; and by generations of nieces and nephews. Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
