LaPorte County Deed Book lists William H. Crichton from the State of IN, for $10.51, SW quarter of the SE quarter of Section 17, 36, Range 2, 37 25/100 acres. See Map Page
Probate Record Order Book K, p.369. Term 3 Sep 1884. In the matter of the Estate of William H. Crichton, deceased. Now comes Alfred Lomax by Counsel and files his bond in the pencil sum of $1000 with John P. Oakes as surety thereon conditioned according to law while bond is in these words (insert) and is approved by the Court. It is therefore ordered by the court that the Clerk of this Court do issue Letters of Administration to Alfred Lomax which is now done in Open Court and day is given. [recorder Dale notes "insert;" however, the insert is NOT readily available - probably in the pile of notes and copied pages. Will update with the "insert" as soon as I locate them!]
Probate Record Order Book K, p. 364. Term 4 Sep 1884. In the matter of the Estate of William H. Crichton, deceased. Now came Janet Crichton, widow of said decedent by Counsel and files her renunciation to act as administratrix and also files her petition asking the appointment of Alfred Lomas as such administrator which renunciation and petition are in these words [recorder Dale then notes "insert," presumably the words of the renunciation and petition; however, they are NOT readily available - probably in the pile of notes and copied pages. Will update with the "words" as soon as I locate them!]
LaPorte County Deed Book entry: John H. Bradley, Commissioner of the La Porte Circuit Court in the suit of Janet M. Crichton against William M. Crichton, Margaret L. Hepburn and Jane A. Crichton, as such Commissioner by Order of the said Circuit Court of La Porte County in the State of Indiana entered in Order Book No. 5 of said court on page 540 conveys to Janet M. Crichton of La Porte County in the State of Indiana for the sum of five dollars the following Real Estate in La Porte County in the State of Indiana to wit: The west half of the southeast quarter of Section Seventeen (17) in Township Thirty-Six (36) north of Range Two (2) west containing eighty (80) acres more or less.
Last Will and Testament of Janet M. Crichton. Deed 6: Be it remembered that I, Janet M. Crichton of LaPorte County in the State of Indiana being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, in view of the uncertainty of life, do make and publish my last will and testament as follows, to-wit: I order and direct that all my just debts and my funeral expenses be paid by my Executor hereinafter named as soon after my decease as the same can reasonably be done. Second, I give, devise and bequeath to my daughter Jane A. Crichton, all my property and estate of every kind and description, real personal or mixed and all rights of property and interest in property in possession of expectancy of any and every kind and description of which I may die seised and possessed or in which I may have any interest, to have and to hold the same unto the said Jane A. Crichton in her own right forever. Lastly. I nominate and appoint my friend Alfred Lomax to be the executor of this my last will and testament, and I hereby revoke all former or other wills by med made and declare this alone as and for my last will and testament. The within and foregoing instrument was signed sealed published and declared by the said Janet M. Crichton as and for her last will and testament in our presence who at her request and in her presence and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names hereto as witnesses. I, Janet M. Crichton the
testatrix named in the foregoing will, being now of sound and disposing mind,
memory and understanding, do make this codicil to my said Will, having since
the execution and publication of said will acquired the legal title to the
West half of the South East quarter of Section Seventeen in township
thirty-six North of range two west in the County of LaPorte do now by this
codicil devise and bequeath the said real estate to my knowledge
daughter Jane A. Crichton to have and to hold the same to her and her heirs
forever. Second I hereby revoke the appointment of Alfred Lomax to be
the Executor of said will and I hereby appoint Dr. Landon C. Rose to be the
Executor of said will and of this codicil. Witness my hand & seal

Crichton acknowledged and declared to be a codicil to her said last will in our presence who in her presence have subscribed our names as witnesses in the presence of each other. State of Indiana, LaPorte County. John H. Bradley being duly sworn on oath says that he was acquainted with James Bradley and Wm. W. Noyes in their lifetime, that they were both residents of the County and State aforesaid during the lifetime that the said Wm. W. Noyes died in this County and State in the month of February 1887 and that the said James Bradley died in the same County and State on the 30 day of April 1887. This affiat [sic] further says that he is well acquainted with the handwriting of both the said Bradley and Noyes and that the signatures of James Bradley and Wm. W. Noyes purporting to be signed as subscribing witnesses to a codicil to the Will of Janet M. Crichton hereto annexed are the genuine signatures of the said James Bradley and Wm. W. Noyes. Crichton has been duly admitted to probate and duly proved by the testimony of John H. Bradley hereto attached, that a complete record of said codicil to said will and of the testimony of the said John H. Bradley in proof thereof has been by me duly made and recorded in Book "D" at pages 127, 128, 129 & 130 of the Record of Wills of said County. State of Indiana, LaPorte County SS: Be it Remembered That on the 22 day of Oct. 1889 Landon C. Rose one of the subscribing witnesses to the within and foregoing Last Will and Testament of Janet M. Crichton late of said county, deceased personally appeared before the Clerk of the Circuit Court of LaPorte County, in the State of Indiana, and being duly sworn by the clerk of said Court, upon his oath declared and testified as follows, that is to say: That on the 6th day of August 1884, he saw the said Janet M. Crichton make her mark to her name to said instrument in writing as and for her last Will and Testament: and that this deponent at the same time heard the said Janet M. Crichton declare the said instrument in writing to be her last Will and Testament: and that the said instrument in writing was at the same time at the request of the said Janet M. Crichton and with her consent, attested and subscribed by the said Landon C. Rose and James Bradley in the presence of the said Testatrix and in the presence of each other, as subscribing witnesses thereto: and that the said Janet M. Crichton was at the time of the making her mark to her name and subscribing of the said instrument in writing as aforesaid of full age (that is more than twenty-one years of age) and of sound and disposing mind and memory and not under any coercion or restraint, and as the said deponent verily believes: and further deponent says not.
