Synopsis: 

• Another note says John SEAMAN was born in Leicester, England in 1604 and is the son of Dr. John SEAMAN of Leicester, England.

• Discrepancy in marriage date - one says 1644, the other 1642.

• Captain John SEAMAN came to America in 1630 and was an original purchaser of the town of Stamford, CT.

• In 1641, they moved to Weatherford, CT.

• Captain John SEAMAN supposedly founded Hempstead, Long Island, NY.

• The Roots and Heritage of Hempstead Town by Natalie A. Naylor, ed., pp. 15-16:  In 1634, a large group of colonists, including John STRICKLAND, Robert COE, Thurston RAYNOR, Richard GILDERSLEEVE, and John SEAMAN left Watertown, MA and established a settlement at Wethersfield, CT.  They were English Puritans, not Pilgrims and disapproved of some of the theocratic practices of the MA government, particularly the restriction of suffrage to church members.  However, they were deeply shocked when a band of marauding Pequot Indians attacked Wethersfield, killing nine men and carrying off two young women into captivity.  In an act of unusual civility, the Dutch Director Walter van Twiller sent his soldiers and successfully recovered the women which undoubtedly provided a favorable impression of the Dutch to the colonists.  Seeking a safer haven, the group then established a settlement at Stamford.  They were joined there by the Reverend Richard DENTON who had come to the colony several years before from Halifax.  DENTON was a strong leader and, though described as a little man, according to Cotton MATHER, had a "great soul" and "his doctrine dropped as the rain, his speech distilled as the dew."  Daniel DENTON who came with his father, Richard....

• The Roots and Heritage of Hempstead Town by Natalie A. Naylor, ed., pp. 22-23:  July 4, 1647, paid Indians "great cattle, some small cattle, wampum, hatchets, knives, trading cloth, powder and lead" for Hempstead.  "The document, signed by GILDERSLEEVE,  John SEAMAN and John HICKS was a simple declarative by Tackapausha (Indian) and Wantaugh, the Montauk sachem that ratified and confirmed the purchase that Hempstead bought in 1643 but now includes the description "wither the bounds and limits of the whole tract of land concluded upon with the Governor of Manhatans."

• The Roots and Heritage of Hempstead Town by Natalie A. Naylor, ed., p. 51:  In the 17th century, a few men, e.g., John SEAMAN, Robert JACKSON, John HICKS, had estates of several thousand acres each, but most of the Hempstead men were small holders who never owned more than 50 acres.

• The Roots and Heritage of Hempstead Town by Natalie A. Naylor, ed., p. 60:  03-1674/75 the town decided to grant individual lots on the neck to those who held gate-rights in proportion to the number of gates they owned and the following September, John SEAMAN, a leader of the town and large landowner, Jonah FORDHAM, the town's minister, and Thomas RUSHMORE were selected to lay out the Cow Neck land in particular allotments to those who had claims to it by gate-right.

• The Roots and Heritage of Hempstead Town by Natalie A. Naylor, ed., p. 62:  11-1681, John SEAMAN...were named town's attorneys to "sire those persons at the next Court of Sessions for trespass that have settled on our land on Cow Neck."

• The Roots and Heritage of Hempstead Town by Natalie A. Naylor, ed., p. 65:  North side became Quaker and John SEAMAN joined the Society of Friends.

Synopsis:

• Richard was a minister in the Society of Friends and traveled extensively in the service, with Samuel PRIOR for a companion, and a minute of unity from the monthly meeting at Westbury.  He visited, in 1725, the Friends of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.  In 1740, Henry PEARSALL accompanied him, with a minute, to visit Friends towards Carolina and, in 1745, he had a minute to visit friends westward.

• Richard's will left 10 pounds to Adam SEAMAN.

• Adam SEAMAN, b. 1704, was Supervisor at North Castle, Westchester County, in 1739.  Will dated at Rye, NY, 20 Aug 1757.
