| SAMUEL SHIPLEY served 1778 - Mar. 1779, under Capt. Miles, 6th Maryland Reg't. Applied for pension 1831, aged 80 of Monroe Co. Ky. Died 2-25-1839, leaving children KETURAH BIGGERS, DORCAS PAGE, RUTH BROWN, PRUDENCE, REUBEN, ASA, JOSEPH, AND BENJAMIN SHIPLEY. Archives of MD, Vol. 043, Page 014 - Ordered that the Commissary of Stores deliver to SAMUEL SHIPLEY, lately a 9 months soldier in the 6th Reg't dischared the amount of 24 Pounds, 3 shillings, and 4 pence in cloathing, due him by the Act to procure troops for the American Army. ADAM SHIPLEY was the son of HUGH SHIPLEY, a Gentleman grantee of 2nd charter of the Virginia Company, 1609. ADAM arrived in Providence, MD from Yorkshire, England in February 1668. ADAM was transported with 9 other young men by John Pawson, a merchant from Yorke, England. The other men were CHRISTOPHER SHAWN, JOHN BROWNE, JOHN FISH, THOMAS MASON, WILLIAM BARTON, RICHARD FLINT, RICHARD PATTERSON, THOMAS WOOD, AND JOHN DIXON. ADAM SHIPLEY served his time (apprenticeship?) to pay for his transportation, and by 1675 had received the "50 acres due him" under the incentive plan. He married LOIS HOWARD in 1676 and they settled in Anne Arundel County, MD. ("The Compendium of American Genealogy: The Standard Genealogical Encyclopedia of The First Families of America", "The Shipleys of Maryland", "The Placenames of Maryland, Their Origin and Meaning". Before the Calhoun Treaty of 1817, the only white people who could legally live in Indian territory were spouses of Indians. JOSHUA BROWN and wife RUTH SHIPLEY BROWN lived in McMinn Co. TN., which was part of the Hiwassee District, which was split into McMinn and Monroe Co. TN. RUTH'S brother CHRISTOPHER SHIPLEY claimed his land as an 'occupant enterer', in 1824. Ky., appoints his beloved son JOSEPH SHIPLEY as his true and lawful Attorney to recover from the administrators of the heirs of JOSEPH SUTTON, dec'd, late of Baltimore Co. & state of Maryland, all of the estate or money owed his wife CATURAH (KETURAH) SHIPLEY, daughter of the said JOSEPH SUTTON, dec'd. |
