| The photo below is of the St. Helen's Church in Wheathampstead, England. In the church on the East Wall is an incised white marble tablet in memory of John Heyworth and his wife Joan, and their three children who all died when infants. Dated 1558, it tells how this couple adopted Margaret Hoo and she became thier sole heir. Margaret married Nicholas Brocket who was christened in the same church in 1562. They had two children, one was known as Mr. John Brocket of Mackrey End. This John married Mary Snagg of Mackery End. One of their sons was John Brocket who marrried Joan Lacon about 1608. John and Joan had a son also named John Brocket who attended Cambridge and married Mary Blackwell in 1635 at Sandridge. This John Brocket sailed to the American colonies with Puritans from England. Story below photo. |
| On April 24, 1638, 500 English Puritans, led by Rev. John Davenport and Theophilius Eaton sailed into the harbor at New Haven. John Brocket was on this ship. The Quinnipiacks and other tribes of Native Americans were being attacked by raiding bands of Pequots and Mohawks., so they sold their land to the Puritans in exchange for protection against them. By 1640 a government had been established and the settlement was named Newhaven. By 1641 New Haven had a population of 800. In 1660, the Hartford and New Haven colonies were at odds over thier boundry lines. John Brocket was appointed as one of the surveyors to settle the dispute. He was a civil engineer and surveyor. A few years later, the Governor of New Jersey appointed John to lay out Elizabeth Towne. In 1667, John was one of the two chosen to represent them in the House of Burgesses. In 1654, the General Court appointed soldiers to cooperated with a fleet sent by Cromwell, against the hostile intentions of the Dutch on the Hudson River. John Brocket was appointed as Surgeon. John served as surgeon in King Philip's War from June 1675 thru June 1676. John served as Deputy to the General Court of Connecticut during the years of 1671, 1678, 1680-82, and 1685. He died in Wallingford, Connecticut March 12, 1690 at the age of 80 years. He had 10 children, one was Mary Brocket who married Ephraim Pennington. One son married Elizabeth Doolittle. |
