Some kids are playing hide and seek in a park where there are seven trees. One of the kids is �It,� and the others are all hiding behind trees. Of course, you can�t see them, because they�re hiding. See if you can figure out the fewest possible kids hiding, using the following information: A girl is hiding to the left of a boy. A boy is hiding to the left of a boy. Two boys are hiding to the right of a girl. ***************************** #2 In Common What is the one thing shared by all three items in the same group? Here�s an example: �Don�t sit in the back of the boat,� said Tom sternly. Sternly describes Tom�s tone of voice. In addition, stern is another word for �back of the boat.� So sternly is a particularly appropriate word for ending the sentence. Make a Tom Swifty out of each of the following sentences. The first letter of each adverb appears as a hint. 1. �Does anyone have a hammer?� asked Tom s_________. 2. �I hope you like the gift I brought,� said Tom p__________. 3. �This poison ivy is making me itch!� exclaimed Tom r__________. 4. �I got first prize,� reported Tom w__________. 5. �I wish I had written down the things I need at the store,� said Tom l________. ***************************** #4 Bottleneck Put a coin in a bottle and then stop the opening with a cork. How can you get the coin out of the bottle without pulling out the cork or breaking the bottle? ***************************** #5 Can You Explain? To answer these questions, you have to let your brain think in different ways than you may be used to. Here's an example: Question: A girl who was just learning to drive went down a one-way street in the wrong direction, but didn't break the law. How come? Answer: She was walking. See if you can let your brain switch directions to answer these questions: 1. How can you throw a ball as hard as you can and have it come back to you, even if it doesn't hit anything, there is nothing attached to it, and no one else catches or throws it? 2. Two students are sitting on opposite sides of the same desk. There is nothing in between them but the desk. Why can't they see each other? 3. There are only two T's in Timothy Tuttle. True or false? ***************************** #6 Crossing the River Jake was standing on one side of the river, and his dog Scruffy was standing on the other side. "Come on Scruffy, come, boy!" shouted Jake. Scruffy crossed the river, ran to Jake, and got a treat for being a good dog. The amazing thing was that Scruffy didn't even get wet! How did Scruffy do that? ***************************** #7 Digging Dirt How much dirt is in a round hole that is 9 feet deep with a diameter of 3 feet? (Hint: You don�t have to do any math to get the answer. Just use your head!) ***************************** #8 Name the Dog Once a dog named Nelly lived on a farm. There were three other dogs on the farm. Their names were Blackie, Whitey, and Brownie. What do you think the fourth dog�s name was? ***************************** #9 New Shoes One day, two mothers and two daughters went shopping for shoes. Their shopping spree was successful � each bought a pair of shoes, and all together, they had three pairs. How is this possible? ***************************** #10 One for Each You have a bag with four candy bars in it. You promised to give each of your three friends a candy bar, and you want one for yourself. How can you accomplish this, and still have one candy bar left in the bag? ***************************** #11 Card Identification Here are the backs of three cards from an ordinary deck of cards. A B C You have to identify each card as a queen or king and as a heart or spade based on the following four pieces of information. 1. There's at least one queen to the right of a king. 2. There's at least one queen to the left of a queen. 3. There's at least one heart to the left of a spade. 4. There's at least one heart to the right of a heart. ***************************** #12 Cat and Mice Five mice � Mindy, Marty, Muriel, Mabel, and Mike � were nibbling the cheese on the kitchen table, but Whiskers the cat chased them back into their hole.
