SUGAR COOKIES (BETTY CROCKER)

1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1-1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp almond extract
1 egg
2-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
granulated sugar or colored sugar

Mix butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, almond extract
and egg in a large bowl.
Stir in all remaining ingredients except for granulated sugar.
Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Divide dough in half. Roll each half 1/4" thick on lightly
floured surface.
Cut into desired shapes with 2" to 2-1/2" cookie cutters.
Place on cookie sheet. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.
Bake 7 - 8 minutes or until edges are light brown.
Remove from cookie sheet. Cool on a wire rack.

You may also decide to frost these rather than sprinkle with sugar.

Vanilla Butter Frosting
1/3 cup soft butter or margarine
3 cups powdered sugar
1-1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 Tbsp milk (approx)

Blend butter and powdered sugar.
Stir in vanilla and milk.
Beat until frosting is smooth and spreading
consistency.
May need to add a little more milk if too thick,
or more powdered sugar if too thin.
