Mary Ann was born March 14, 1874 near Dalton GA, according to Bible Records. Her parents were John C. Carden and Sarah Frances Cash. Six year old Mary Ann is shown on the 1880 Murray Co, GA census records in the home of her Cash grandparents. Her name was often listed as CASH because her mother and father were not married until she was about 18 months old. Mary Ann died on October 16, 1961 in Garden Grove, Orange County, California at the age of 87. She is buried beside her first husband, William Calvin Gilbreath, in the Westminister Memorial Park in Midwest City, CA. She married her second husband, Joe Hern after Calvin died. She told her family that Joe had been her childhood sweetheart. No children resulted from this second marriage. It is uncertain if Mary Ann grew up mostly in Georgia or Alabama, but probably both in NW GA/NE AL. She married Calvin Gilbreath in DeKalb Co, AL. The couple lived in this area for several years and then moved to be near John C. Carden in Marion Co., AL. Mary Ann gave birth to ten children. One little boy (3rd child) did not live. Her first born son was named William A. Wesley. *Wesley (born near Albertville, AL) was soon followed by John Marcus, Pearlie, Myrtle, Amelia, Ida, Zelda, Millard, and Floyd. All of her children were born in Alabama, except the last 4. Ida was born during the year or two the family spent near Houston, MS during the move from Alabama to Texas. Zelda, also known as Zeldia or even as Smiles, Millard, and Floyd were all born in Milam Co, TX. Of these children only one did not eventually move when the family again changed residence to California: that child was Wesley. By the time the Calvin and Mary Ann Gilbreath family moved permanently to California, Wesley had established a life in Floyd Co, TX with his wife, Dora and their children.
