Megan and Tony's place in the hills is terrific! Pollock Pines is about an hour outside of Sacramento and an hour outside of Lake Tahoe. Megan and Tony swear that it will be the next Redwood Hills, and I have to agree with them. Very relaxing, amazing garden, beautiful surroundings and overall a great stay! We toured around downtown Placerville and shopped in terrific book, bead, and art stores. We lounged around the pool all afternoon and Megan cooked a terrific Italian dinner of Mushroom Risotto. We tried to see Jurassic Park III at the movies in Placerville, but since it was the first showing on the opening day, the 12:30 show was sold out after we bought our tickets, and there were no more good seats left. So we turned our tickets in and waited for the 1:30 show at the same place, in the other theater. It was the first showing in that theater, and about 30 minutes into the movie, they skipped from Reel 1 right to Reel 3, ahead about another 30-40 minutes into the story! One second they were talking about going to the island and were dry and clean, and the next second they were tromping through the jungle all bloody! Woops! The management cancelled the show since it was going to take them another half hour to fix the problem, so we turned in our tickets and waited for the 2:40 show back in the original theater we were in to start with. We finally saw the whole movie and it was pretty good! We watched Wag the Dog and "Winter" from A Year in Province by Peter Mayle and spent much time enjoying the house and garden. I also read the book while I was there! Highly recommend it! (exerpt here)
A trip to Lake Tahoe wouldn't be complete without a boat cruise, so Megan and I took a wonderful 3 hour tour of South Lake Tahoe over to Emerald Bay on the Tahoe Queen, a paddleboat commissioned in 1985 on the lake. the weather was perfect and so was the lake and the boat and the day. Each deck had surprises for us; the spray at the back of the top deck near the paddles, the windows on the 2nd deck where you could see the paddles turning, and the glass bottom on the 1st deck where the water rushed by. And chocolate chip cookies on the way back! The eagle's nest was empty but spectacular; the Vikinghaus in the bay was eerie and neat, and the story about the round wing being built that way since the $20,000 Persian rug couldn't be cut was interesting. I know where I want to camp next time I have a boat and a helicopter for a long weekend...
Come back soon for photos of Meg & tony, the house, garden, and 4 wonderful cats!
After Megan and Tony's place, a night in San Francisco was awesome with Greg & Lisa. We went to a terrific Spanish Tapas restaurant in the Mission District for dinner and traded US state quarters! I had "P" and she had "D" for our collections! We watched the movie State and Main and had a good but brief visit.
