Where I Live

I'm 30 years old. Until October of 1999, I lived all but three weeks of my life in Vermont, the same state my family settled almost 300 years ago. I guess our mountains are in my blood. I lived most recently in Rutland, which is the second largest city in Vermont with 18,000 people. For my many international friends, Vermont is a tiny state in the northeast corner of the United States. I lived just about two hours from the Canadian border, and a little over three hours from Boston.

I moved to southwestern Virginia on October 23, 1999. This area of Virginia reminds me constantly of my birthplace. The land is almost identical, and the small towns have a New England feel to me. I always said that if I ever left Vermont, I would live in Virginia. Now that has become true. I now live with my fiance's family in Speedwell, Virginia. We are living with them temporarily while we get our home built on the land Lewis bought in Max Meadows, some twenty miles from here. We plan to spend the rest of our lives on top of our mountain in Max Meadows, surrounded by oaks and a few pines, with our dogs and cats for company. We have plans to add a riding horse, some ducks, and possibly a riding donkey to our animal family once we are living there. We've talked about a goat or two as pets, as well. We have the area for the paddock fenced off already, and plan to build a stable and kennel as soon as we get the house done.

Lewis and I took a trip June 28, 2000, to visit his family in Indiana. Originally, we were going to stay for three weeks to help sort out some family stuff, then head home to Virginia. As August approaches, we've decided that we'll stay in Indiana for a little while, probably at least until our baby comes in September. We're in the tiny town of Lynnville, Indiana right now. It's incredibly rural, with corn and soybean fields everywhere. We're occupying the second floor of an old farmhouse his mother leases here, though we expect to have it to ourselves, and Lewis's brother, when their mother moves on in the next month or so. It's a neat old house, and I'm looking forward to setting it up to suit us, for as long as we stay. We're still keeping our land in Max Meadows, and will still build our permanent home there. We plan to raise our baby there. For the time being, I'm hoping tolearn more about my ancestors who settled in Indianapolis, as long as we're here.
