He made his Company debut in 1982 with Caesar and returned here the following year to stage the U.S. premiere of Tippett's The Midsummer Marriage. Subsequent SFO assignments include Don Giovanni, Handel's Orlando, Eugene Onegin, Le nozze di Figaro, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Queen of Spades, Il trovatore, Anna Bolena, Peter Grimes, Manon and Idomeneo, in addition to Semele and La traviata which he staged last season./ SFO DataBase
Internationally celebrated director JOHN COPLEY, who has staged numerous works at most of the world's major opera houses and music festivals, was resident director at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, where he worked on many new productions. Among his greatest successes there were Le nozze di Figaro, Cos� fan tutte and his acclaimed production of La boh�me which is still in the Royal Opera repertoire after 25 years. In addition to directing over 30 productions at Opera Australia, he has staged over 12 new productions at English National Opera, including the award-winning Julius Caesar which was subsequently mounted at San Francisco Opera, in Geneva, and most recently at the Metropolitan Opera. He also directed Merola Opera Program productions of Die Fledermaus (1993), Don Giovanni (1994), Il barbiere di Siviglia (1996) and Cos� fan tutte (2001). His most recent work has been seen at the Lyric Opera of Chicago (Tosca, Il barbiere di Siviglia), the Met (Norma), London's Royal Opera (Boh�me), as well as in Athens, Greece (Il corsaro), San Diego (Ariodante) and Dallas (Lucia di Lammermoor).- SFO Profile
