| World Premier for 2007 Composer: Matthew Hindson The Rave and the Nightingale, Technologic I Choreography: Matjash Mrozewski Costumes Design: Christopher Read Lighting Design: Christopher Dennis There is a new kid in town from Toronto. In Mrozewski's new work, traditional and contemporary concepts egage in tug of war and ultimately prove they can live peacefully together. "Matjash Mrozewski picked me to do a neoclassical pas de deux and my partner is Sarah Van Patten, a young, talented girl. I really had fun working with Matjash on it and helping create the role. It's a tricky pas de deux with a lot of bending arms and moving through each other's movement. The music is also great--I hope I'm not giving away too much." | The impetus behind the Rave and the Nightingale is an exploration of what might have happened to Franz Schuberts String Quartet No. 15 transported to the 21st centurytheres a it of tension between the classical and this contemporary.
This ballet sets up that opposition in its first moments, when two women, one in a classical tutu and one without, take the stage in silence. From there it move into a contemporary pas de deux for a couple whose conflicted, nearly combative relationship seems symbolic of the warring in the choreographers head. Mrozewki describes them as not quite connecting. And in fact the moments that they do seem to come together are fleeting. That duet gives way to one for a classical couple whose energy Mrozewski describes as guarded. Their focus is very much on holding onto who they are. I dept thinking in terms of birds, like nightingale in the title. To me theyre endangered, running out of places to live, so every time they enter a space it feels tentative and defensive. But as the piece progresses theres a sort of relaxation on their part, while at the same time the other couple starts to find a little more complicity. / SF Ballet Program Guide 2007 |
