reviews for "it's far too easy to get things right" continued...

"It's Far Too Easy to Get Things Right" is the debut mini-album released by the Perth band debaser earlier in the year, which the band are still promoting in the run-up to another release at the start of 2002.

The CD opens with a short rock instrumental called "This is Not Clever," which is something of a misleading title as the track is actually quite good. Although it doesn't really develop very far, the song is catchy enough to be pleasing and energetic enough to get me reaching for the air drumsticks and guitar...

There is a change of direction for the second track "Fuck You," which is a bitter acoustic love song featuring only guitar and vocals. And it, too is rather fine. This song sounds a little like Eels and features some superbly cynical lyrics which cannot fail to induce enjoyment.

Third track "Shutdown" is another rockish instrumental which, like track one, is enjoyably loud and catchy but doesn't particularly go anywhere. I can see it working very well in a live situation, however, where it would be a refreshingly driving short, sharp blast of rock.

The fourth track is a return to slightly quieter music, although not acoustic this time. "Love song" features more of the excellent bitter lyrics heard in track two, along with the some disillusioned-sounding music which adds to the rambling charm of the song. It is another very good track.

The fifth and sixth tracks do away with the loud - quiet - loud format of the CD, instead carrying on in gentle fashion. "Where did the Time Go?" is a soothing, reflective song strummed over quiet vocals, and "Acoustic Song" is just what it says. Both these tracks are nice enough songs, but fail to match the second and fourth songs, mainly due to their more relaxed tones which are just not as much fun as bitterness!

Overall I liked this CD. The production is a better than a lot of self-made discs and it does not sound like it was recorded underwater in a cupboard like so many others do. The songs are all well written, and the album is helped by the contrast of the rock instrumentals and more reflective quieter songs.

Highlight of the CD has to be the fourth track, which is quite possibly one of the best songs I've heard in a while. If the band can produce more like it, they will certainly do well.

"It's Far Too Easy to Get Things Right" is available from Goldrush Records in Perth or direct from the band (email:
