From La Realistica

This recording is the follow up to "it's far too easy to get things right" (La Realistica gave it 5/10) and I must say it couldn't be more different if it tried.

The first song on the CD is "This Is" which is a one and a half minute pop song which manages to encompass an array of musical styles, most notably the Jesus And the Mary Chain-esque chorus which really elevates the track to another dimension.  "This Is" one of the best guitar pop songs I have ever heard in my life, and I hate guitar pop, but no matter who you are or what music you enjoy this track will drag you over to the debaser camp kicking and screaming while whistling this tune along the way.

After such a great opener I was almost scared to delve into track two, which in all honesty I thought could never live up to the high expectations I now had for this demo, and well it didn't.  In saying this though "Slow Suicide" is a nice little track and is quite a catchy melodic number.  Perhaps it would have been better to put this track first on the recording.

The next tune up is "Scalet Fever" which is the basically the most fucking dire piece of shit that has ever been.  The song itself is annoying, the singing is weak and the words are terrible.  Unsurprisingly this track is the only one not written by the frontman Ross Thorburn.

Fourth on the billing is "She" which is quite experimental in its own little way and has lots of unusual little features which add something to this otherwise poor song.

The last two tracks are "I'm Sorry" & "Swing" which, to anyone who has heard debaser before, are standard Thorburn tunes which are neither displeasing or musically surprising. The only quibble I have with these songs is that they seem a bit stale in comparison to the opening to tunes on "Thirty Fingers".

If you sit down and concentrate hard about what this demo means to debaser and what it will show to the general public you can really only come to one conclusion, this is a coming of age recording.  When "it's far too easy to get things right" first landed on the La Realistica steps I wrote it off as boring, conventional, predictable etc etc.  "Thiry Fingers" has proved that these boys have what it takes to become great musicians and in Ross Thorburn we have found a good songwriter.  I would recommend this recording to anyone but I can assure you the next will be much better.
