| From AUBL debaser (3 piece lo-fi pop-rock band from Perth) sent me their mini-album 'Thirty Fingers' quite some time ago so i thought it would be about time to give it another listen and write up a review I think that the problem with this release is the up and down nature of the songs. I often find myself thinking that a track's not so good but then it picks up and doesn't sound quite so bad anymore. The main thing that makes the sound of the tracks on 'Thirty Fingers' bad is the flatness and the rather out of tune moments - the vocals arent particularly strong either. debaser have a lot of energetic and enthusiastic moments every now and again but i dont think that it's quite enough. Track 1 'This is' starts off fairly quietly and not so good then kicks off and sounds pretty decent Track 2 'Slow Suicide' is probably one of the better tracks as the vocals are much better and the nice acousticy moments come across quite well. Track 3 'Scarlet Fever' has got an excellent chorus but i think the verses have got far to many words in them to sound good. The solo at the end works quite well but it does sound a tiny bit off at times. The piano work is good too. Track 4 'She' is probably the weakest track. The guitar is a bit too loud and times and makes it difficult to listen too which is a shame because it almost started off quite well. It doesnt really go anywhere tho..... (?) Track 5 'I'm Sorry' is decent enough - another slow one like track 2 Track 6 'Swing' is probably a live favourite. It starts off quiet then has a pause and a shout of 'Fuck Off' (that fits in with the lyrics) then it kicks off into quite a nice bouncy sound. Unfortunately there's some awful use of feedback in the 2 verse before it goes back into a nice chorus. Without that feedback bit I'd say that this track was outstanding.... Overall i think debaser would sound much better with improved production and their probably not too bad live but this release - although it has plenty of good moments - needs much more to be particularly exciting to listen to. I also think that perhaps some of the tracks could probably do with an extra minute or two as 3 of the 6 are less than 2 minutes long and never really go far enough. |
