Places of Residence of Moses Ashbrook:

Moses moved in 1779 from Hampshire Co., VA to southwest VA as is proven by the records.

Moses lived in either Montgomery or Washington Co., VA from 1779 through 1783.

From 1783 to 1790 there is no proof where Moses lived. He might have gone to TN with his son George who moved to TN in 1784 and lived there until 1788.

More likely in 1784 he moved to Buncombe Co., NC since his daughter Hannah Mary married Nicholas Woodfin there about 1785. Nicholas Woodfin was definitely in the Buncombe Co., NC area in 1785.

Moses1 Woodfin said on the 1850 census that he was born in TN in 1788 but the census could be in error.

Nicholas Woodfin and Moses Ashbrook were both from Hampshire Co., VA. However Woodfin left Hampshire Co. with his family about 1771-72 and lived in Greenbriar Co., VA. He moved to Buncombe Co., NC in 1784.

Moses lived in Buncombe Co., NC from 1790 to 1799. He left in 1799. Three grantor deeds in 1799 show that he sold his property that year. He is not on the 1800 census of Buncombe Co.

Moses Ashbrook, Sr., James Ashbrook, and Moses Ashbrook, Jr. signed as “Petitioners for Reduction of Constitution Limits of Jackson Co., TN”- July 08, 1806.
