What happened to John Elliott?

Matilda and her father were living next door to each other 1850 in Russell Co. and brother Smith is not far away. Matilda was embraced by her family and supported by them in her role as a single mother.

After finding a marriage bond for Matilda and John Elliott in Pulaski Co. dated May 9, 1839, over the past 30 years  I have played many scenarios in my mind about "what happened to John Elliott?" Well actually Matilda was abandoned by Milton Elliott.

The week of April 2015, I located a marriage bond in Casey Co. for Matilda Ashbrook and Milton B. Elliott. I was befuddled! A lot of online searching netted the following information:

Ancestry.com

Milton Barnes Elliott

Marriage 1 Cyrene Ann Sallee b: May 1815 in Pulaski, Kentucky, United States • Married: 28 MAY 1835 in Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky• Divorced: 3 Apr 1845

Marriage Notes: Source: letter - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Kaurish; 323 Maple, Somerset, KY 42501 - A "Deed of Gift" was made Sept. 28, 1840 by James D. Allen to the infant children of Milton B. Elliott and Cyrene (Sallee) Elliott of Pulaski Co. The "Deed of Gift" involved James D. Allen making the highest bid on some household furniture which had been mortgaged by Milton B. and sold at auction. Allen bought the furniture and gave it to the children "so that they would not be deprived of the necessities of life." John Sallee, Constable of Pulaski Co. handled the sale and I am guessing that he was the same John Sallee who gave bond for Milton B. Elliott and Nancy (I think the author meant Cyrene, Nancy was Milton’s mother) Elliott's marriage on May 28, 1835.

First husband was Milton B. Elliot, who probably died about 1845 in Kentucky. A family rumor says Milton left her (he had numerous legal problems)and went to California never to be heard from again. Her second husband was John Huff, married about 1851 in Tenn.

And the John Elliott I located many years ago was the grandfather to Milton.

Final Thoughts:

Milton Elliott was a two timing scoundrel! Either he did high tail it west due to his legal (and moral) delimma or met an untimely death at the hands of an angry father or brother.
