Additional Questions with Percent

1) You and two friends are at a pizza parlor.  The total cost for your drinks and a large
pizza is $14.90 before tax.  The tax rate is 5%. You wish to leave a 15% tip.

 

a)      Is calculating the tax (5%) and the tip (15%) that same as just calculating a total
20%?  Prove your answer.



b)      You want to share this bill equally, and no one wants to deal with any change
smaller than a quarter.  So, how much will each of you pay?



c)      When you get ready to pay the bill, the guy at the cash register says you have won
the Pizza Prize – they pay for the pizza, you just pay the tax and tip.  Keeping in
mind your no small change policy, now how much must each of you pay?



2) Ok, rewrite the story above, only make it Cowlitz county with a sales tax rate of 7.6%.
 Please answer questions a, b, and c.

The original price was $120.  It was 30% off. 

 

a) Calculate the discount, then calculate the tax on the amount of the sale.



b) Now, calculate the discount by SUBTRACTING the sales tax % from the discount %,
then calculate that amount
