DEATH VOMIT (Indonesia)

Hello there Sofyan!! How’re you & how’s the situation in Yogyakarta? Then, describe about Death Vomit & give a simple history about the band. What’s the latest progression of the band? Who are the present lines up?

We’re fine now... and now we're writing some new materials for our next release. Death Vomit started on April 1995, we used Disposed as our band's name before Death Vomit. We have 7 lines up changes until now. And the lastest lines up is: sofyan (vocal, guitar), okky (bass) and roy (drums).

How was your latest live appearance, supporting Ingrowing? How many & what songs have you play & how’s the crowd response? Death Vomit has long time never been on stage, so how do you feel?

It’s a really kick ass!! Most of freaks still waiting for our appearance and they support us very well. We played 6-7 song (sorry, I forget it). That’s great gigs. We like it.

After the ‘Eternally Deprecated’ EP in 1999, it has become very silent from the band & no material release between these 6 years, that’s such a long period. What’s happen to the band actually?

Actually, each of personal has an activity. So we get busy with these.

Since Agung has gone (and I would like to sorry for that), you have to take over the vocalization & still on the guitar position. How do you feel when you have to play guitars & sing at the same time, it’s not that easy right? Why didn’t the band recruit a new vocalist into the band?

As I told you before, nobody can replace him. So we don't recruit a new vocalist. And I try to replace him. It’s very difficult for the first. But I must to try it and I can.

I’m sure that after 6 years since the last EP, the band must be working for something new after strikes back into the scene? So, tell us if you have ay new songs & how will the new songs sound? How it can be differing to ‘Eternally Deprecated’?

Yes, we work hard for it. We must to spend our time, and we must to think hard to make it perfect than 'Eternally Deprecated'. You can see our strike when it's out. See and feel how it will hook!!!

If the band is preparing for the second release, would you like to tell us anything about it? How many songs you’ve been working for till today? If you don’t mind, could you give the titles of those songs?

I can't tell it now. But now we just finish about five songs such as: Hatred Creation, At Your Dying Faith, Beyond the Black, I Saw Red.

Death Vomit now in the age of a decade of its formation means the band is already 10 years old right now!! How do you feel being 10 years in Indonesian scene, do you feel the satisfaction or do you think you have achieved what you deserve? Is there’s anything the band will do as the celebration so this ages?

Yeah you're right. We feel proud that we can survive in our scene for one decade. Satisfaction......of course. We plan to celebrate it with launch our second release.

You’re not the original member of the band, when & how did you recruited into Death Vomit? Have you ever being a fan to the band before you’re inside? Have you being in any other band before Death Vomit? Where are the previous members; Dede, Will, Ary, Camel, & Wawan?

I recruited in 1998, when Agung and Camel come to my house and they offer me to join Death Vomit. At that time I still in Obscure Of Disfigured. Then I quit from Obscure and join in Death Vomit. I ever being Death Vomit and Mortal Scream fans. And the previous member like Dede, Will, Ary and Wawan, they have a job now. Camel plays in Damnation now. He still plays bass.

Can you tell us who really inspired the musical of Death Vomit? I guess you can’t deny bands like Deeds Of Flesh, Cannibal Corpse & Dying Fetus, isn’t it? As for you, who have become your personal inspirations? I found that most Indonesian death metal bands got influenced from US death metal, why? What do you think about Brazilian, Swedish or Dutch death metal?

Yes, we just influence Deeds of Flesh, Monstrosity, and Malevolent Creation very much. But personally, I like Pink Floyd (the most terrible band I’ve ever heard), 80' heavy metal's band, 60'-70' progressive rock's band, 80'-90' thrash metal's band, death metal (of course), free jazz, jazz rock, fusion, and instrument jazz. Swedish and Dutch death metal was great too. But I don't know why Indonesian death metal bands got influenced from US death metal.

The songs entitled ‘Gelap’ by the band featured in Metalik Klinik Part 1 Compilation in 1997. I heard that the band faced some problems regarding that compilation, & not just Death Vomit, before that I’ve already heard some bad mouths about them. What’s wrong with Metalik Klinik?

At that time, I’m not yet in Death Vomit. But I heard that they don't pay the royalties to bands which participate on Metalik Klinik Part1.

Few years back, I heard that you’re writing a fanzine called Stabwound & producing the Sadist Compilation. But now I never heard about it anymore, how was it? How many issues have you released that zine, are you still working for it?

hehehe....it's a very long time, bro. Sadist Compilation has been released one compilation and after released this it don't work anymore. My friend who work with me has left from this project. It’s the same condition with Stabwound.

Both Yogyakarta & Jakarta can be said as the headquarters of Indonesian death metal!! How’s the scene there? How can you compare the scene today than the last 10 years? Can you recommend the top bands there?

I don't know much about Jakarta death metal scenes. But now is great enough than 10 years ago. Only the strong can survive. And the weak step aside. hehehehe.... I can recommend you the great band from Jakarta, called SiksaKubur. They play in vein of Cr changes Cryptopsy.

Do you listen to any Malaysian bands? What do you know about Malaysians scene, what do you think about us? You have any relationship or contact from here?

I’m so sorry; I don't heard so much about Malaysian scene. All I know that many bands from Malaysian play grindcore. But I have some contact from Malaysia like Hasrol...etc.

Then, thanx for your time bro!! Is there’s anything you’d like to add? When can we expect the release of your new material? Then, close up this interview with your last words…

Thanks for the interview. Keep up the good work to make the scene still alive. and KEEP THE FLAME OF HATE BURNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
