George Dearness, a former resident of Townsville, died at Tully on Tuesday night after a lingering illness, which followed an accident about 12 months ago. Mr. Dearness was 82 years of age and is survived by a grown-up family. His wife predeceased him about 11 years ago. Mr. Dearness was a printer in Townsville for many years. His funeral will take place in Townsville on Thursday morning.

General Notes: OBITUARY

Mr. William John Dearness, one of the best known South Townsville residents, passed away on Friday, at the age of 74. A native of Leith, Scotland, the late Mr. Dearness came to Townsville as a lad of eight with his parents and except for a period of six years spent in New South Wales, Townsville had always been his home. He was among the first pupils enrolled at the Ross Island State School. Bill Dearness went to sea at an early age, but left it in 1909 to join the pilot service, and later he had charge of the powder magazine at Brookhill, until his retirement in 1944, when he took up residence at Alfred Street, Aitkenvale. He is survived by his widow, four daughters, Mrs. V. Laufer, Mrs. J.D. Stevens, Mrs H.J. Clarke and Mrs. A. Farren, and one son Sid.

A well known resident, Mrs. Emily Dearness, died on Saturday morning. Mrs. Dearness was born in Staffordshire, England. She came to Australia at the age of 11 with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Horton and the family took up residence in Cairns. In 1896 Mrs. Dearness came to Townsville, and here married the late Mr. William Dearness, and she had resided here ever since. She is survived by one son, Sid (Melbourne), and four daughters, Mesdames V. Laufer, J. D. Stevens, H. J. Clarke, and A. Farren, all of Townsville. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon.
