Portugal to Africa (Feb 2001)
Over the last 7 days I have bounced around...

Portugal (lisbon, lagos, sagres, faro)  Spain (huelva, seville, cadiz, gibraltar, algericas)

Tomorrow morning I set sail for AFRICA!!!. To Tangiers and hopefully down to Casablanca to find my
ex-parisian love. I have really gone off my original travel plan because of recommendations from other
backpackers. I have met people on this adventure that you would never meet at University, or at IBM or in
any other sane place.  Yesterday I talked to a 60 year old Italian man that has spent the last 6 years
walking the globe. He saved up money for three decades and his goal in life is to walk around the world
and through every country. He had stories from walking USAs Route 66 that would blow your mind.
Mad but with a genuine toothless grin on his face!

SANGRES (ALGARVE)
Mindblowing View!  On a surreal windy and stormy day I sat on the edge of the cliffs and let the
torrid winds overcome the effects of gravity on my arms and legs. My limbs fluttered and i prayed
that I wouldnt be sucked over the edge.  From that vantage point I watched water explosions ....
when an ocean wave is huge enough it smashes into the side of a clay cliff with such raw intensity..
and explodes into a million particles of mist. All that remains are serene waterfalls that drain down
the side of the cliffs. until the next violent wave approaches...

Sangres was considered the end of the world for centuries...until Christopher Columbus made his
journey over the edge of the world... From Sagres the ocean does look like it just drops off...

LAGOS (ALGARVE)
Ios of Portugal.  Small town, that winds around a large maze of bars, discos, lounges, bars and more
bars. Lagos claim to fame is that it has the most alcohol establishments per square meter in the world.
The place is built for a 24-7 party.  You can lose yourself in the streets sober..and you will never find
your way out if intoxicated.  Even the hostel has a bar and the rooms circle the central outdoor patio
(where beer machines beckon). Also not mentioned in the tour guides is that Lagos is where the
infamous european slave trade began.

FARO
13th Century walled fort and cathedral taken over by the Christians (Dom Afonso III) killing-driving out
the Muslim Moors.  Scary church with an interior decorated with human skulls, femurs and pelvic bones
is still giving me vivid nightmares!!
