A. Another common myth shattered...it IS possible to get pregnant the first time you have intercourse. And why not?
The key words here are timing and contraception:
TIMING
If you're one of those lucky women who know their body signals sooooo well that you know when you're ovulating (releasing egg from ovary), then you know (or will soon!!) which days of the month you should avoid intercourse, to avoid getting pregnant.
Unfortunately, we can't all tell exactly when ovulation is occuring. And even when we can, it's not consistent from month to month. In other words, you can't always feel it and you can't always predict it. That's why the "rhythm method" is not usually effective as a method of contraception.
CONTRACEPTION
This is the key to preventing pregnancy. From barrier methods (condoms, sponge, diaphragm, cervical cap and spermicides) to hormonal manipulation (birth control pills, implants and injections), a wide variety of effective contraception is available. (And in many colours, tastes and sizes)
Bottom line?
Either way, a visit to the family doc for some advice seems warranted!
Do you have the signs of early pregnancy?
