One of the many hormonal signals involved in this process is a surge of
luteinizing hormone (LH) from the brain's pituitary gland, which acts on
the ovary to allow the release of the egg (ovulation).
The combined estrogen-progestin pills used for birth control work by blocking
this LH surge. This has the effect of blocking ovulation. No egg release
means that that frisky sperm has no egg to meet in the uterus. No meeting?
No baby!
