The most common form of balding is male-pattern-balding, otherwise known as a member of familial alopecia (family related balding). This form of balding begins in early adult life, occurs in those with a familial/genetic predisposition (not much you can do about that), and is mediated by androgens (male hormones). It is the classic receding hairline in front and just off to the sides a bit, leaving a ring of hair above the ears and along the back of the head.
(More details on how balding occurs are available for the scientists among you.)
What we now know to be true is that:
So what can you do? Well, there are some options.
The highly popularized Minoxidil (Rogaine) is one option. This liquid is applied twice a day and does more for stopping or slowing the hair loss than for any sort of replacing. Hair loss is slowed and stopped after 2-3 months of use and up to 1/3rd of patients notice a moderate amount of hair growth following that. Only catch is that if you stop using it, you will begin to shed hair again. (Not to mention the price!)
Another option becoming popular again is hair transplant. There are a variety of ways to do this and you'd need to speak to a specialist in this field for more information. But many men have been happy with the results.
And other than a hairpiece, it seems to me that there remains only one other option. LET IT GO. Let it go slow or hasten it with a shave, keep the ring around the back or do a Michael Jordan look. Whichever option you choose, you're the one who needs to be comfortable with the result. And remember, some women find baldness sexy! (You think Jean-Luc Picard is popular because of his uniform??)
