March 1980: Beryl Gregory (Mary Gregory's daughter and Jennifer Gregory's mother) has a two month affiar with the married George Monday.
September 2000: Beryl Gregory's infidelity twenty years earlier drives her partner Charlie mad, he tries to kill her and disappears.
October 2000: Beryl is murdered, her body is found hanging from a tree. Charlie is suspected by a nationwide serch is to no advantage.
Jennifer and her little sister Taffy move in with grandma Mary and geat auntie Anne.
September 2001: Jennifer moves in with best friend Cheryl Robertson and her older sister Leigh Robertson when Anne has a stroke.
July 2002: Charlie Mackenzie (Jennifer and Taffy's father) holds Jennifer, Taffy, Cheryl Robertson, Mary and Anne hostage for two days when he returns. He tells them of how he killed his wife and threatens to kill all of them. He bundles the hostages into a stolen car in the early hours of the morning and drives them into the river near Mary and Anne's home. The hostages climb out on to the embankment and Charlie Mackenzie supposedly drowns, his body is never recovered with claims that he was carried off to sea.
September 2002: Taffy is taken into care when Mary and Anne fail a to pass a social inspection being deemed unfit and to old to look after a child.
